Qualifications required
· Registered health professional
Experience required
· Considerable experience of providing specialist assessment, formulation and interventions with children and young people with moderate to severe mental health difficulties and/or neurodevelopmental disorders and/or behavioural problems.
· Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups across the whole life course and with presenting problems that reflect the full range of severity.
· Experience of working with children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, including carrying out specialist diagnostic assessments and of adapting therapeutic work according to social communication needs.
· Experiences of supervision, including supervising members of the multi-disciplinary team.
· Experience of teaching and training.
· Experience working with multiple agencies and working in a multidisciplinary team.
· Experience of consultation work, both within mental health services and working with other agencies.
· Experience of leading on projects.
· Experience of the use of clinical outcome measures with children and young people.
· Evidence of continuing professional development
· Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing

Key responsibilities
CLINICAL
· To provide specialist assessment to children and young people with developmental or mental health difficulties using information from a broad range of structured psychometric and semi-structured clinical methods.
· To formulate and implement specialist treatment of clients’ mental health problems and/or behavioural problems, based on an appropriate conceptual framework and current evidence-based best practice, taking into account the current NICE guidelines.
· To undertake a range of therapeutic interventions, drawing on a number of models and employing a range of modalities (individual, family and group) adapted and tailored to the needs of the individual and the context. To make decisions about treatment options taking into account highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family or group.
· To undertake ongoing evaluation of the outcome of the interventions.
· To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients under their care and to monitor progress and evaluate outcome.
· To be able to overcome a variety of barriers to communication when working with children and families who may be very anxious, vulnerable and have difficulty articulating their problems, requiring imaginative and sensitive approaches towards engagement.
· To exercise autonomous professional judgement and responsibility for their professional practice.
· To contribute highly specialist advice and consultation to the multi-disciplinary formulation of appropriate therapeutic approaches or intervention plans, and to be involved in, or oversee aspects of their implementation in collaboration with other staff.
· To consider and assess child protection concerns and to act on these in accordance with child protection procedures.
· To have knowledge and understanding of the principles of the Care Programme Approach and to support and contribute to the CPA care planning process for clients on CPA. To take responsibility for initiating, planning and reviewing statement of care plans and, if appropriate, in agreement with the line manager take on the care co-ordination role for clients on CPA.
· To consult with and provide specialist guidance to carers and families of service users.
· To be committed to non-discriminatory practice and be aware of issues of religion, ethnicity, gender and disability.
· To offer an expert professional opinion where required regarding such issues as psychological and cognitive functioning, degree of suicidal risk, risk of harm to others and whether a child is at risk of significant harm for child protection purposes. This may involve attendance at or providing detailed reports for child protection conferences, special educational needs reviews, family group conferences and in court.
· To be an active member of the division and promote the culture of participation and outcomes in all aspects of the business of the division.
POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT
· To lead on a key service area within the neurodevelopmental pathway and leading on group interventions.
· To contribute/advise, as required, to the planning and development of the operational policies and service delivery in the Team through undertaking agreed project work.
· To identify appropriate developments in the services provided with a view to address identified need, and to make recommendations to the Operational Manager and Professional Lead, taking responsibility for implementing such developments as required.
· To develop and maintain good communication links with the NHS, Social Services, Education and other agencies working in the area of Child Mental Health.
· To participate in multi-disciplinary meetings concerned with the delivery and development of clinical services and contribute a specialist perspective as appropriate.
TEACHING, TRAINING, SUPERVISION AND CONSULTATION
· To be responsible for regularly providing consultation and advice to colleagues from other professions.
· To provide high quality Trainee placements in the service, organising and monitoring workload, providing supervision and assessing clinical competence.
· Maintain supervision skills by attending Supervisors Workshops as required.
· To provide clinical supervision to members of the multi-disciplinary team.
PROFESSIONAL/ADMINISTRATIVE
· To participate in regular clinical supervision and to negotiate further specialist supervision, development and training with the Professional Lead, fulfilling the CPD requirement of your professional register. To keep up to date with relevant developments in the practice of recommended treatments.
· To participate in regular appraisals with the Service Manager and Professional Lead and to agree standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
· To work within the Code of Ethics and the relevant professional practice guidelines your professional register and the professional guidance framework of the Trust.
· To work within the framework of the policies and procedures of the Trust and to undertake the mandatory training stipulated in Trust policies.
· To be responsible for relevant data collection on work activities, inputting data onto the Trust databases as required, and to maintain a high standard of clinical record keeping.
· To maintain and develop Information Technology skills appropriate to the demands of the post. This includes being able to communicate effectively using IT, and to be fully competent in using IT systems to electronically search and gather relevant information related to assessment and intervention.
· To participate fully in supporting the activities of the profession within the Trust, including attending relevant meetings.
