Job summary

The Non-Medical Approved Clinician is an advanced practice role providing expert clinical practice, consultancy and professional leadership. One of the essential criteria is for the candidate to have or working towards the Approved Clinician status which will empower the Nurse consultant to take responsibility for the care and treatment of patients detained under the mental health act.

Main duties of the job

- Plan and provide skilled and competent care to meet a patient's health and social care needs involving or referring on to other members of the health and social care team as appropriate.

-Lead on the development of a strategy for workforce development in nursing.

- To demonstrate competency and experience within these four pillars of clinical practice, which are the facilitation of learning, leadership, research and development.

Nurse Consultant for Older Adult Inpatient Services (New Spenser Ward)

Job Overview

The Non-Medical Approved Clinician will provide highly specialised care with an inpatient setting, using advance clinical knowledge and evidence based. They will act autonomously as an expert within the multidisciplinary team, providing leadership within the clinical team and exercising the responsibilities of the Approved Clinician.

The Non-Medical Approved Clinician will provide expert advice to ensure the needs of the patient are met by leading, challenging and changing practice within the clinical setting.

1. To achieve Approved Clinician status (AC) within 6 months, and to exercise the role of the Approved/Responsible Clinician, being accountable for the care and treatment of patients, at all times acting with the powers and adhering to the Mental Health Act as set out in the Code of Practice.

2. To support and lead on ward rounds in the absence of the Responsible Clinician.

3. To look for opportunities to support future Non-Medical Approved Clinician applicants. This includes the provision of guidance and support for the education and development of Trainee MPACs working to achieve Approved Clinician status.

4. To provide professional leadership to nurses in the Older Adults Mental Health Service.

5. The provision of expert practice, utilising highly developed specialist knowledge underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical expertise.

6. To be individually accountable for all clinical interventions, order necessary investigations, and provide treatment and care individually, as part of a team and through liaison with/ referral to other agencies. To undertake highly specialist assessments in order to formulate the most appropriate form of intervention.

7. Demonstrate a critical understanding of their broadened level of responsibility and automomy and the limits of their own competence and professional scope of practice, including when working with complexity, risk, uncertainty incomplete information.

8. The Non-Medical Approved Clinician will advise the Older Adults Service management team on issues of clinical practice and models of service delivery in relation to proposed new initiatives, thereby contributing to and informing the operational and strategic planning processes across the organisation.

  • Post graduate level qualification in nursing or degree level nursing with additional Post Graduate CPD course relevant in this field.
  • Independent Non-Medical prescribing qualification (V300)
  • Management Qualification or significant senior management experience in a healthcare setting
