Job summary

Womens Health and Paediatrics (WHP) are please to advertise for a Nurse Consultant post in Gynaecology (subject to confirmation of banding). This is a new post in the service, with lead focus on delivering Hysteroscopy, in Gynae-oncology. The postholder will play a crucial role in delivering Cancer pathways and improving patient experience.

As this is a newly created role, there is huge scope to work closely with colleagues, to innovate the service and contribute to the future strategy of Gynaecology.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant Nurse will practice autonomously at an advanced level to promote clinical pathways across the womens health (Gynaecology) cancer and screening programmes. They will be skilled in colposcopy, hysteroscopy and ultrasound scanning. This is a key post within a specialist area and will have a clear role in defining, shaping and developing the gynaecology cancer service across all sites in the Trust including community settings.

The role will be to provide leadership to cancer and screening Clinical Nurse specialists to realise their full potential as autonomous practitioners to ensure seamless delivery of patient care ensuring high quality clinical outcomes.

The post holder will act as an innovator, motivator, key change agent and role model in order to support and influence clinical pathway redesign within gynaecology cancer services including quality improvement, implementation of national initiatives, service reconfiguration and new digitally enabled models of care.

The post holder will work closely with the Specialty lead, Divisional Director, Matron, Operational team, patients and wider MDT teams to develop a gynaecology cancer service responsive to the needs of patients and staff.

Job responsibilities

The role blends a significant proportion of direct, higher level clinical care with education, research and management / leadership activities. The post holder will have an educational commitment to ensure clinical pathways and practices are enveloped in all staff training programmes. They will undertake independent prescribing alongside medical staff within clearly agreed protocols and guidelines.

The post holder will:

Lead a service redesign empowering the nursing team to meet the needs of the local population in line with key objectives outlined in local and national policy documents.

Lead on the professional and clinical development of the gynaecology cancer nursing team and expansion of nurse led services across the sites.

Manage caseload of patients from diagnosis to treatment in Consultant Nurse clinics developing a one stop service.

Undertake independent prescribing alongside medical staff within clearly agreed protocols and guidelines.

Be skilled in colposcopy, hysteroscopy and ultrasound scanning. Develop and deliver a nurse led one stop TWR clinic

Undertake initial gynaecology assessments/reviews of women presenting in ED and CAU, and inform care pathway planning.

In collaboration with MDT colleagues actively promote and engage teams in contributing to Clinical Pathway Groups (CPGS) and wider quality improvement work.

Provide expert clinical advice to all medical and nursing Gynaecology staff to ensure best practice standards are met that will improve clinical outcomes and influence a reduction in unnecessary interventions.

Make a significant contribution to the clinical governance agenda by ensuring practice is evidence based and through the development of staff competence at all levels.

Lead on education for nursing and non-medical professionals with academic providers.

Develop the research and audit agenda, ensuring a multi-disciplinary approach at all times.

Represent the directorate at external networks and report on progress to the Division.

As an acknowledged expert in the provision of patient management in gynaecology cancer and screening pathways the consultant nurse will be the lead clinician responsible for the care and management of a defined group/groups of patients requiring specific support in collaboration with clinicians.

Lead on on-going modernisation and new ways of working and innovation to improve patient outcomes.

Independently receive and make referrals and lead on the management of a caseload for gynaecology cancer patients, treatment, diagnosis and follow-up across health care settings.

Demonstrate advanced clinical skills and knowledge that informs practice decisions in a variety of clinical settings.

Make independent clinical decisions and initiate investigations, care /treatment and technological intervention within an agreed framework.

Maintain a professional behaviour at all times promoting a positive image of the Ashford St Peters NHS Foundation Trust in line with World Class care Values at all times.

Provide professional and clinical leadership, providing a highly visible and authoritative presence ensuring the delivery of excellence in core, specialist and advanced nursing practice, audit, research, and service and practice development agendas.
