Overview of Responsibilities :
Patient Care
Provide a welcoming environment in the department
Demonstrate you put patients first. Make everyone feel special. Offer to help. Show kindness and respect always
Maintain the highest possible standards of compassionate and professional patient care with particular attention to privacy and dignity
Always introduce yourself with your name and designation to the patients, in the clinic rooms, at the reception and the waiting area
Ensure the waiting areas are clean safe and conducive at all times, start of the day, in between patients, clinics and at the end of the day. Ensure sufficient drinking cups
Identify patients identity and check in to department, record on Millennium Electronic Patient Records (EPR)
Check patient is well, record temperature if required. Follow current guidelines on admittance to department/clinics
Manage allocated clinic under non direct supervision of the registered nurse
Ensure any relevant patients notes, the necessary patient details clinical forms, investigation results and other tests/procedures are accurate and available on patients arrival
Ensure that the patients are kept informed of the waiting times. Inform nurse in charge if any problems arise
Carry out routine tests / screening prior to consultations- urine test, pregnancy test, weight (BMI) etc.
Be competent in the use of blood pressure, pulse machine and record findings
Maintain accurate records and ensure all relevant documentation is completed, consent, correct/accurate labelling of laboratory samples
Assist in effective management of patients during examinations; invasive procedures and treatments in Gynaecology Outpatient setting with regards to personal needs
Chaperone patients undergoing clinical procedures and treatments.
Assist patients with personal care and hygiene which they are unable to manage independently
Utilise appropriate moving and handling aids to reduce risk of injury to the patient and themselves
Escort patients to other departments within the hospital
Undertake assigned tasks involving direct care as directed by nurse in charge
Recognise and promote the patients rights cultural beliefs, values and attitudes
Be aware of the Trusts Standards of Practice and Care
Maintain mandatory updates on Information Governance, manual handling, fire and cardiac arrest procedures and any other required mandatory training.
Specialist Clinical Duties
Achieve and maintain competency in specialist duties
Set-up of specialist gynaecology/urogynaecology outpatient diagnostic and treatment clinics including particular attention to infection control; and patient & equipment safety
Assist and support operator/clinician of specialist outpatient diagnostic and treatment clinics
o Routine Diagnostic Flexible cystoscopy
Includes assisting specialist nurse/clinician with invasive surgical treatments (intra-detrusor Botulinum Toxin A Injection (Botox) and Urethral bulking (Bulkamid) under local anaesthetic
o Urodynamic procedures
o Outpatient Hysteroscopy (including Myosure)
o Colposcopy
o TWR (two week rule) clinics & Transvaginal Scan
o Specialist Nurse Clinics (e.g. vaginal pessary, TWOC (trial without catheter) /catheter care, vulval dermatology; smear; fertility; pelvic pain)
o General Gynaecology OP clinics
Understand potential complications and risks of said procedures
Understand processes in dealing with and reporting patient and equipment complications and incidences to the registered nurse/clinician
Be able to identify patients needs following such procedures
Undertake Venepuncture duties following completion of training and evidence of competency
Provide reassurance to patient and ensure advocacy for the patient
Ensure patients privacy and dignity is maintained at all times
Communication
Maintain good communication with patients prior to and throughout procedures.Verbal advice to patients regarding their procedure diagnostic and treatment should be giving by the registered nurse/specialist nurse at all times, refer all advice and questions to the registered nurses/specialist nursesAt all times, assist the trained nurses/ specialist nurses in both clinics which are/ may be taking place at the same timeAnswer the telephone in accordance to the Trusts Standards for Practice and Care in a timely and professional manner and refer all calls to the trained nurse in chargeCommunicate with patients and relatives in a courteous sensitive caring manner and refer to the nurse in charge as appropriateReport any complaints incidents concerns or near misses to the nurse in charge and complete online DatixReport to the nurse in charge any relevant changes observed in a patients conditionBe sensitive to the patient and their environment ensuring communication of a personal and or private nature is discreet and patient confidentiality is maintained at all timesBe aware of current hospital procedures on fire cardiac arrest and manual handling and to take appropriate actionEnsure confidentiality at all times
Other Duties
Be responsible for maintaining and promoting the tidiness and cleanliness of all patient areas including clinics /treatment rooms, store room, sluice and waiting area.Check equipment daily to make sure all equipment are in working order. Inform the appropriate personal /service department if not workingCheck clinic rooms are well stocked before clinics startTake responsibility on a rotational basis:Annual service of the medical equipment
6 monthly change of the smoke extractor filters
Stock/supplies/stationary order using the current IT system / Oracle.
Pathology stock swabs, cytology /histology/ urine specimen pots
Hand hygiene audit
Other shared and expected responsibilities:
Photocopy and stock up stationary in clinics
Daily stock clinics with consumables and instruments
Order linen
Put clean sterilised instruments away in their appropriate place
Ensure the sluice is clean and safe and used instruments in correct storage boxes
Check expiry dates on everything in use i.e. consumables, stocks/supplies/sterilised packs etc.
Adhere to infection control policy and procedures demonstrating an understanding of universal precautions and good hand hygieneParticipate in clinical audits as required by the Trust Womens Health and Quality Assurance TeamUndertake as required collection and removal of laundry and rubbishUndertake the movement of specimens to pathology departmentUndertake movement of health recordsMeasure for the protection of themselves and the patientsAdhere to Trust Code of Conduct
