Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and dedicated doctor to join the General Internal Medicine (GIM) team at St Peter's Hospital. The post holder will be an integral part of a dynamic and supportive multidisciplinary team committed to delivering high-quality care to acutely unwell medical patients. The role involves active participation in daily ward rounds, inpatient care, and the general medicine on-call rota. Under the supervision of Consultants, the post holder will gain extensive experience managing a broad range of medical conditions.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and service development. They will also contribute to the supervision and education of junior doctors, working collaboratively with allied health professionals to ensure a patient-centred approach. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as the role involves close liaison with internal departments and external healthcare providers. Main duties of the job

The post holder will play a key role in the delivery of safe, effective medical care as part of the GIM service at St Peter's Hospital. Core responsibilities include the daily clinical assessment and management of medical inpatients, with active participation in consultant-led ward rounds. The doctor will work as part of a multidisciplinary.

Participation in the General Medicine full-shift on-call rota is a central component of the role, including evenings, nights, and weekends, ensuring the provision of 24/7 acute medical services. The post holder will take responsibility for initial assessment and stabilisation of acutely unwell patients and support timely referral and escalation to specialist services where appropriate.

A strong commitment to clinical governance is required, with involvement in audit, quality improvement initiatives, and adherence to Trust guidelines and national standards. The post holder will be expected to maintain high standards of documentation, support safe handover practices, and contribute to a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

The role also includes supervision of foundation doctors and support for nursing and allied health staff. The post holder will be approachable, collaborative, and proactive in teaching, mentoring, and sharing clinical knowledge to enhance team performance and patient outcomes. Attendance at educational sessions and engagement in personal professional development are also expected.
