Job summary

Our Cardiology department provides the ideal opportunity for talented nurses with a commitment to delivering a high standard of patient care. We are seeking experienced cath lab nurses with a strong clinical background who are enthusiastic to join our Cardiology unit.

The nursing team will rotate through the cardiac catheter labs, recovery area and pre-assessment whilst supporting the overall needs of the service when required. We have an exciting patient group, from elective day-cases and inpatients, to emergency patients requiring angiogram and angioplasty procedures out of hours.

The elective service runs Monday to Friday and focuses on interventional and electro-physiology procedures. The nurse will also be asked to undertake the co-ordinator role to facilitate effective patient flow through the catheter lab.

The emergency service extends out of hours to support our highly successful primary PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) service. Our cath lab nurses will be asked to support the on-call rota after appropriate training has taken place.

The nurse will proactively lead and engage in the education and development of colleagues and self within the Cardiology setting.

Main duties of the job

1. Clinical Responsibility- To care for patients undergoing a procedure in the catheter lab- Takes nursing history of patients through observation during the pre-assessment clinics and day-case unit.- To have specific cath lab experience- To be the scrub nurse and support the operator during cardiac procedures.- To support on-call service

2. Responsibility to patient- Maintain and protect the safety, confidentiality and dignity of the patient in the recovery area- Ensure observations are recorded and acted upon if needed-Experience with post procedure care/ complications and management

3. Communication- Clear communication between multi professionals- Close working relationships with wards/ CCU at ASPH to facilitate cath labs

4. Leadership- Leadership/ co-ordinator role within the labs to ensure efficiently- Assist Lead Nurse by mentoring/ training staff within the department.- Allocated a nursing team within the catheter lab to support with training, appraisals.

5. Health Safety and Security- Completion of risk assessments- To ensure safe practice within the area

6. Education and Training- Work the CPE team to support training in the catheter labs- Active role supporting junior staff completing their competency work booklets.
