Job summary

The main duties and responsibilities of the appointee will be:

To provide Senior Middle Grade cover for all orthopaedics duties as detailed below including participating in the on-call rota.

To work with the existing orthopaedic surgeons across both Ashford and

St. Peter's Hospitals to provide an efficient and effective orthopaedic service.

To provide inpatients, day case and outpatients care for the patients requiring elective and emergency orthopaedic surgery, in accordance with the Trust contractual obligations.

To adopt a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your care and in partnership with other colleagues working in the speciality for the proper function of the department.

The Clinical Fellow would undertake to ensure that clinical audit was an ongoing programme and that agreed actions required as indicated from audit were implemented.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDICS AND TRAUMA

Since April 1998, the Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma has operated jointly across the two sites. The Department has 21 consultants continuing the trend of increasing sub-specialisation, minimising the number of tertiary referrals and improving training opportunities.

All surgical and trauma emergencies are admitted into St. Peters Accident and Emergency Department. There is a 9 bedded ITU service on the St. Peters site.

The two hospitals serve a population of around 450,000 from an area which includes Guildford, Woking, Chertsey, Walton-on-Thames, Weybridge, Staines, Bedfont, Feltham, Spelthorne. There are 650 beds in a range of specialities, and a full imaging department with CT and MRI scanning and laboratory services. Both hospitals have a modern post graduate centre with full library services and the Trust runs an hourly transport between the two sites for staff.

STUDY AND TRAINING

There is a well-stocked hospital library available on site in Ashfords new Education Centre and in the Orthopaedic Department. There are weekly clinical meetings in the Education Centre including clinical pathological demonstrations. Lunchtime lectures are given on alternate Tuesdays by hospital staff or invited speakers from other centres.

There is regular orthopaedic participation in other teaching courses held in the Post Graduate Centre at the invitation of the Clinical Tutor.

RESEARCH

Opportunities for postgraduate education for the post-holder includes departmental meetings, clinical meetings, college courses and meetings and joint meetings with surgical specialities. The Department holds regular audit meetings and in addition there are protected hospital half days for education on a regular basis.

RECREATION, TRANSPORT, ETC

In the immediate locality, there are leisure centres at Staines, Sunbury, Woking and Feltham, squash courts, in Egham and Feltham and many golf courses nearby. Windsor, Runnymede, Hampton Court, Wisley (RHS) Gardens, the Thames and other places of interest are within a 10 mile radius.

Central London is easily accessible with regular BR trains from Ashford and Woking to Waterloo and Piccadilly Line trains running from Hatton Cross Underground station. For motorway travel, M3, M4, and M25 are close.
