Main duties of the job
To provide clinical advice and support to all people who call the Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU). This will involve providing real time clinical advice to women, carrying out a risk assessment and identifying appropriate pathways for women to achieve safe and effective outcomes. All advice given will be evidence-based and will be recorded contemporaneously onto the electronic patient record. The Telephone Triage midwife will be responsible for liaising with other departments and health professionals to ensure that timely and safe care is provided in the most appropriate setting. All advice given will be based on the information gathered from a rapid and thorough assessment of the symptoms described and will consider any previous calls or visits to the Maternity Assessment Unit, any pre-existing risk factors or relevant past medical history including medical, obstetric, or psychological concerns. There will also be an opportunity for the telephone triage midwife to work clinically on the Maternity Assessment Unit to undertake face to face assessments. The midwife will need to adapt to the needs of the service and organisation, including moving off site during the changeover to the MAMAS line system. If desired each shift can be split to incorporate both a telephone triage and clinical element.
About us
Here in Oxfordshire, we offer a unique set up of our Maternity Services with around 7500 babies born annually.
We have 4 stand-alone Midwifery-Led Birth units within the county and also offer home births to all areas. There is also an integrated Midwifery-Led birth unit, where around 10% of women and birthing people choose to go in labour. As a tertiary hospital, the John Radcliffe is composed of a Delivery Suite with 3 Maternity Theatres and a specific Maternity Recovery Ward. We work closely with specialist services such as the Fetal and Maternal Medicine Unit, Breech Team, and Maternity Bereavement Teams. Midwives employed within the service have the opportunity to rotate to all our units/departments providing care to both low and high risk women.
For those working with us, we have a substantial support network for staff, focusing on wellbeing and development. This includes a team of professional Midwifery Advocates, Wellbeing Champions, staff networks and a staff Maternity Psychologist. You will be supported by the Practice Development Team who provide regular study days and updates and support staff clinically. We champion diversity and strive to ensure every member of our team feels included, valued, and has the confidence to speak up and be heard.
We genuinely believe that by supporting our staff to feel happy and offering support within their work environment, we ensure the best quality of care for the women and birthing people who access our services.
