Consultant in Obstetrics with an interest in Complex Obstetric Surgery

Applications are invited to apply for the above post in the Maternity Department at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The department is seeking a capable and motivated doctor who enjoys working in both a District General and tertiary referral service and wishes to effect change and improve care for patients within this service.

The successful candidate will join the maternity service which provides general obstetric services to the local population - 7500 women per year are cared for within the Trust. There are also tertiary referral services in fetal and maternal medicine, supported by a Level 3 neonatal unit.

We anticipate that the successful candidate will have expertise in complex obstetric surgery and will continue to maintain this expertise after appointment.

The post is required to offer service and training in complex obstetric surgery including complex caesarean birth with underlying pathology such as Placenta Accreta Spectrum. A successful candidate will engage with stakeholders to progress development in this part of the service.

This post is intended to be mainly based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford but there is also a consultant antenatal clinic at the Horton Hospital, Banbury. This clinic is required in alignment with the OUH strategy of care closer to home. On call will be Maternity only at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust provides services across four sites (John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, Horton Hospital Banbury, Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital & the Churchill Hospital, Oxford).

Obstetric inpatient and outpatient services are based at the John Radcliffe. In addition outpatient obstetric clinics are undertaken at the Horton. The successful applicant may be required to work across both sites. The post holder will be expected to undertake a antenatal clinic based at the Horton Hospital.

The post-holder will be expected to undertake sessions providing acute general intrapartum care & obstetric care supported by at least 2 other obstetricians in training as part of this post.

The post holder will manage obstetric in-patients at the John Radcliffe Hospital & undertake obstetric on-call duties of no more frequent than 1:9, currently 1:16 with internal cover (equivalent to 1:12.8 in the worked year). The out of hours on call attracts a supplement paid at Band A.

Teaching/Research

OUH NHS Trust is a teaching hospital, the post-holder will be required to participate in programs for teaching, examining clinical students & training junior doctors. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder's contribution to teaching, training & research will be included in the regular job plan review.
