Job summary
The role includes working in a variety of modalities in Radiology. All modalities deal with the diagnosis and treatment involved in giving the patient the best possible experience, with their journey through the department. Working alongside Nurses, Radiographers, Radiologists, and administration personnel will help in your development to becoming a Competent, Committed, and Courageous team member, who will show a Compassionate and Caring attitude when Communicating with all service users.
Main duties of the job
- Supporting Nursing staff, Radiographers & Radiologists with invasive procedure's.
- Assisting the Radiologists with drainages, fine needle aspirations & biopsies.
- Daily checks to be completed in each modality.
- Support other Radiology Assistants.
- Assist with ordering , receiving equipment & placing in the store cupboard.
- Support the Nurse's in the Day Care Unit with admissions, caring for the patient post procedure & discharges.

Clinical:
- Introduce and welcome patients in the waiting area, confirming their identity according to the Trust Policy.
- Show compassion, sensitivity and understand the anxiety and fear prior to the patients procedure.
- To be able to complete patient documentation for admission, care pre and post procedure and discharge.
- To demonstrate high standards of hand hygiene following the 5 moments and knowledge of the Infection Control Policy.
- To perform, accurately record and report patient observations, under supervision on SEND (System Electronic Notification Documentation) and follow the track and trigger as appropriate e.g. Temperature, Pulse, Respiration, Blood Pressure and Oxygen saturations.
- Maintain the patients dignity and privacy at all times
- To answer the telephone, dealing with enquiries promptly and courteously, taking appropriate action or referring to the correct member of the Radiology Team.
- To demonstrate good communication skills when dealing with patients, relatives and members of the Multidisciplinary Team, utilizing sensitivity, empathy and the ability to manage conflict.
- Act as a patients escort taking them to the changing rooms, preparing them for the relevant procedure and escorting them to the correct area for the procedure.
- To be responsible for setting up equipment for Ultra Sound and CT ensuring the safety to patients and colleagues is adhered to.
- Understand and become competent in scrubbing to be able to lay a sterile trolley for the Radiologist
- Assisting the Radiologists during examinations and procedures e.g. HSGs (Hysterosalpingograms, Fine needle Aspiration, Biopsies, Drainages and Pre op marking.
- Locate blood results prior to procedure and communicate them to Radiologist.
- Organise and run an Ultra Sound and CT list for both inpatients and outpatients having scans and invasive procedures.
- To act with tact and empathy as a chaperone during examination/procedure.
- To be fully conversant and adhere to infection control and COSHH policies to prevent cross infection and hazards.
- To maintain accurate and legible patient and departmental records.
- To demonstrate initiative and the ability to identify changes in a patients condition, by passing RAID competencies, these then need to be reported to a designated Nurse/Radiographer or Radiologist.
- To assist with patient moving and handling, using correct methods and equipment as required. (As per Manual Handling Policy)
- To undertake Mandatory training as required by the Trust, to develop and increase skills, to improve the service to the public
Environmental:
- To ensure all unit areas are clean, organised and well stocked
- Ensure equipment is cleaned correctly as per hospital policy; stored appropriately and faulty equipment is removed from service, labelled and reported to DMEED, as per Trust policy.
- To assist with the removal of waste and linen from the unit to the designated areas.
- To be aware of any potential hazards and know how to report and deal with the immediate initial reaction.
Administration:
- Understand and be able to use EPR, CRIS and other systems required within the department to obtain, store and transmit information.
- Ensure that stationary levels within each modality are maintained and restocked as required.
- When required assist with the day to day management of stock control and ordering for the department, ensure it is checked and put away on delivery and missing items reported to the Co-ordinator.
- To undertake clerical duties in each modality e.g. booking patients in, answering the telephone and entering data
Safety & Quality:
- To ensure maintenance and safe use of equipment is followed in line with Trust policy.
- To adhere to the Ionising Radiation Regulations, Health & Safety, Infection Control
- To ensure all faulty equipment is reported to an appropriate senior member of staff.
