An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior clinical fellow to join a dynamic Spinal Neurosurgery team at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford from August 2025 . The successful candidate will follow a one year programme, obtaining comprehensive experience in managing adult patients with spinal pathologies. Training will include an emphasis on diagnostic techniques, as well as surgical and non-surgical treatments.The post holder will obtain broad ranging experience and training in the management of a wide variety of spinal conditions. We offer a broad range of surgeries for degenerative spine, spinal dysraphism's, spinal vascular pathologies, intradural and extramedullary tumour surgery, and spinal trauma. The successful candidate will be expected to gain experience with Minimally invasive surgical techniques including full endoscopic spine surgery, Spine Awake Surgery, Navigated spine surgery, lateral and anterior approaches to the spine. The Spinal Neurosurgery service is currently involved in a planned integration with the Spinal Orthopaedic service. This will provide the successful candidate with comprehensive spinal surgery training. There will also be opportunities to gain experience with the Functional Neurosurgery service which includes spinal neuromodulation for pain and spasticity management.
Main duties of the job
Duties will be tailored to include:
- Leading the daily ward round attended by the junior doctors and Spinal ANP. The successful candidate will be expected to be competent at recognising and managing medically and surgically deteriorating post-operative patients and be able to coordinate their care in conjunction with nursing and senior team members. The fellow will be closely supported by the Consultant body.
- Ensure smooth management of unscheduled and scheduled spinal surgery patients admitted under their care. Attend morning handover and X-ray meetings with the wider team
- Careful pre-operative preparation of patients for theatre. The service has a robust preoperative assessment process for elective surgery but the Fellow will be expected to review all pre-operative patients on the day of surgery to ensure efficient running of the operating lists.
- Attendance in theatre. The successful candidate will gain excellent exposure and opportunities to develop specific surgical skills in spinal surgery.
- Leading spinal out-patient clinics, assessing new referrals and follow-up patients.
- Attending and contributing to decision making in the weekly Spinal Neurosurgery MDT meetings.
- Participating in the general Neurosurgery on-call rota.
- Attendance at M&M meetings
- We would encourage development of audit and research projects during this Fellowship
- Partaking in the Oxford Teaching Programme for trainees and medical students
- Attending Thames Valley Spine Network MDT and 'Away Days'
