Job summary

We are recruiting to a band 6 Specialty Cardiothoracic Physiotherapist on a permanent basis. The successful candidate will work in the Heart Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital, providing Physiotherapy to the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit, Cardiothoracic and Cardiology wards. The role is diverse, providing care spanning the patient pathway from admission to ICU to discharge from Acute Hospital, providing an exciting challenge.

This post will form part of the core, specialty Cardiothoracic team which has grown in the past 2 years. As such an enthusiastic, flexible and improvement focused individual who is prepared to be directly involved in the leadership of the Cardiothoracic Therapy services will be a good fit for the role. The post will work closely with the Team Lead Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist, alongside their peers (one other specialty Physiotherapist and two speciality Occupational Therapists) and provide supervision to two band 5 rotational Physiotherapists.

The Cardiothoracic team sits within the Adult Critical Care clinical group, and works in close partnership with the Therapy team for the Oxford Critical Care Unit and Churchill Intensive Care unit.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide advanced assessment and treatment for patients with complex needs, and to provide experienced advice, guidance and information to patients, health and social care professionals, carers, relatives and other non professionals.
  • To be an integral member of a team assuming delegated responsibilities for supervision of students, junior and assistantmembers of staff.
  • Participates in evidence based projects and assists in implementing changes within designated team/area and setting and monitoring standards of practice.
  • Uses initiative in day to day practice, identifying methods to improve the quality, safety and clinical effectiveness of the Therapy services and engaging with the team in a collaborative manner to implement change.
  • To deputise for the Team lead Physiotherapists or Clinical Lead Physiotherapist for the Adult Critical Care workstream.

Job responsibilities

  • To perform advanced physiotherapeutic assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical, psychological and emotional conditions.To provide a diagnosis, develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme in discussion with the patient according to assessment findings.

The communication skills of motivation, explanation, demonstration and education will be used with a wide variety of patients.
  • To utilise a variety of effective communication skills to address specific problems such as cognitive impairment, expressive and receptive communication difficulties, embarrassment, anxiety, pain, fear, visual/hearing impairment, language and cultural diversity issues.
  • To ensure that relevant information is communicated in a timely manner to other members of the Physiotherapy service, across all relevant sites, other agencies and other departments and NHS trusts as necessary.

Responsibility for Patient/Client Care

  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own clinical practice as an autonomous practitioner and seeking advice from senior staff where appropriate.
  • To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients with multi-pathologies and complex needs following evidence-based guidelines. The assessment involves the interpretation of complex information from a variety of sources.
  • To be skilled in the use of a variety of manual physiotherapy assessment techniques including auscultation of the chest, palpation and invasive suctioning which ultimately assist in the advanced clinical reasoning process to formulate a diagnosis.
  • To formulate a patient centred problem list and individually tailored treatment plan based on assessment findings. To create soundly reasoned prognoses and recommend best course of intervention and developing negotiated goals leading to comprehensive discharge plans.
  • To deliver an individual physiotherapy treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options using advanced reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills including manual physiotherapy techniques, patient education, exercise prescription and exercise classes.
  • Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
  • Evaluate patient progress, based on validated and standardised outcome measures, reassess, alter and progress treatment programmes accordingly.
