OVERALL OBJECTIVE:

  • To provide phlebotomy services to patients on the Trauma Wards and Outpatient Department

Main duties of the job

To work within the trauma unit to take blood and perform ECG's on trauma patients. To work within the team, to professionally divide workload on a daily basis.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To check the identity of the patient, ensure that any special instructions have been followed (e.g. period of fasting) and to gain patients consent to proceed.
  • To achieve and maintain competence in the use of electronic systems associated with the ordering of blood samples
  • To take venous blood and capillary specimens of good quality using aseptic technique and ensuring the minimum of pain and discomfort to the patient.
  • In cases of particular difficulty to refer the patient back to the requesting doctor.
  • To dispose safely of used needles and contaminated waste in the appropriate containers.
  • To ensure that samples are satisfactory for the investigations requested.
  • To sort and transfer specimens to the appropriate laboratory for analysis.
  • To abide by the safety policies of the ward/department
  • To maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • To perform any other task relevant to the achievement of the overall objective.
  • Work closely with the trauma technicians and liaise with members of the laboratory, nursing and medical staff working in the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
  • To comply with all trust statutory and mandatory training requirements
  • To participate in annual appraisal and undertake personal development opportunities as agreed with line manager
  • To participate in audit activity as required
