Job summary
The Plastic Surgery department offers reconstructive surgery facilities to patients from the south and west parts of the Oxford Health Region and also the northern part of the Wessex Health Region. In addition, head and neck cancer tends to be referred from the northern part of the Region to the Unit. All aspects of reconstructive plastic surgery are dealt with in the unit apart from major burns. The Oxford Craniofacial Unit is also based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in association with the Plastic Surgery Department. The John Radcliffe is a Major Trauma Centre and is one of the leading centres in the UK for timely cover of open fractures.This is an opportunity to work with an inspirational team of consultants in a cohesive and forward-looking department..
Main duties of the job
The post-holders' duties will be primarily at The John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals in Oxford, but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations and its partner hospitals.Clinical DutiesThe Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery provides a comprehensive reconstructive surgery service to Oxford and its surrounding areas. We have a consultant-based service. Services provided by existing consultants in the department include plastics trauma surgery, craniofacial surgery, cleft lip and palate, upper limb, bone infection, sarcoma, breast reconstruction, skin cancer, autologous transplantation, head and neck cancer in addition to hypospadias. We have Burn Facility status as part of the London and South East Burn Network. We are fortunate to have our offices, outpatient clinics, theatres, adult and children's wards and day case units co-located in a new block on the John Radcliffe site. The Head & Neck Unit is located in the Cancer Centre at the nearby Churchill Hospital. The Department has a substantial presence at the nearby Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital, where the plastic surgery service has a hand surgery workload, and provides reconstructive support to the Bone Infection Unit and Sarcoma services.The post holder will fulfil the role of a senior registrar in their chosen area of subspecialist interest and will support the service generally.

Teaching/ResearchOxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The department is actively involved with Oxford University providing research opportunities.Clinical GovernanceThe post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.Personal and Professional DevelopmentThe post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.
