Job summary

A Specialty Doctor post in Anaesthesia is available now at the Oxford University Hospitals. The post will be based jointly with the Horton Hospital and Oxford hospitals. This is a replacement post. Main duties of the job

Principle responsibilities

The post holder will participate in the resident anaesthetic junior on-call rota and be responsible for providing elective and emergency anaesthesia for the surgical specialties listed below. In addition the post holder will provide emergency airway support to the hospital and be involved in the initial resuscitation and transfer of critically ill patients. The rota will consist of a mixture of normal days, long days and nights. It is expected that the successful applicant will perform duties appropriate to the grade and his/her level of experience.

Theatre lists

  • General Surgery (including paediatrics, breast and colorectal)

  • Gynaecology

  • Urology

  • Trauma

  • Oral Surgery

  • Paediatric Dental Surgery

  • Cataract and minor Eye Surgery

  • Plastic Surgery (including paediatrics)

  • Obstetrics or other specialty interest (by arrangement, in Oxford)

There is a trauma list each weekday afternoon. There is a liberal Day Surgery policy. Refer the attached job description for more details.

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Medical degree
  • Full registration and licence to practice with the General Medical Council
  • Shall have completed at least five years' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis), at least two of which will be in anaesthesia
  • Advanced Life Support
  • Shall have equivalent experience and competencies

Desirable

  • Primary FRCA
  • Final FRCA or equivalent
  • ATLS, APLS or equivalent
  • Formal transfer training
  • Completion of core training in anaesthesia (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 2 years recognised training at time of appointment in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, equivalent to that expected to be undertaken in a UK anaesthetic training programme.
  • Broad anaesthetic experience equivalent to that gained in a UK district general hospital or teaching hospital anaesthetic dept.
  • Experience in paediatric anaesthesia
  • Experience in trauma anaesthesia
  • Critical care transfer experience
  • Ability to make decisions independently or recognize when help required.

Desirable

  • At least 5 years' anaesthetics experience / PG training in anaesthesia, equivalent to that expected in a UK training programme
  • Current NHS Experience
  • Experience in intensive care
  • Ability to undertake solo anaesthesia lists
