Job summary

A part-time (0.8 whole time equivalent) post as a Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in Heart Failure and Cardiac Imaging is available now at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. The role is primarily intended to support our heart failure service.

The post-holder will primarily be involved in delivering heart failure services, including supporting our well-developed heart failure inpatient and community specialist nursing teams. You would join two existing consultants with a specialist interest in heart failure, and a large friendly cardiology department.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder's duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford but it is a condition of the appointment that the post-holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations. The post-holder will primarily be responsible for providing Heart Failure services, including supporting the Heart Failure nursing team, as well as some General Cardiology. There will be opportunity for subspecialist sessions in cardiac imaging.

The post-holder will be required to deliver some heart failure clinics and inpatient care at the Horton hospital in Banbury, or at other nearby localities such as community hospitals, this is currently envisaged as being between twice and four times a month but is likely to increase in the future. Travel time will be incorporated into the job description and future job planning as appropriate.

About us

The Oxford University Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust provides integrated cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery services for health authorities in the Oxford region and for a number of health authorities in neighbouring regions. The population served is approximately 2.5million.

The successful applicant will join the existing Consultant colleagues who currently provide comprehensive secondary and tertiary services. The NHS department works closely with the University Department of Cardiovascular Medicine with rotation of clinical lecturers between the two departments and Consultants working across both departments. Academic interests include myocardial hypertrophy, vascular biology and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Cardiology provides a local service to the residents of Oxfordshire, as the local district general hospital, as well as offering a tertiary services. Good relations with colleagues in neighbouring district general hospitals ensures a flow of referrals both elective and emergency.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder is encouraged to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students and training junior doctors. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holders contribution toteaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review, and participation beyond that included in everyday activity could potentially attract additional time in job planning.

There is an active programme of research in the Department, and we are looking to continue to develop our clinical research in heart failure, as well as to continue to build links with relatedpreclinical researchers.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and externalaccrediting bodies. All newly appointed consultants within the Trust are provided with a named mentor and regular meetings support reflective practice.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditionsof Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs Oxford University Hospitals

ManagementThe post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his /her patients and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the leadclinician and/or directorate chair.

Administrative support and facilities for the post holder is providedin the form of office space and the band 4 and band 3 secretarial support the department receives. The proposed SPA is subject to review at job planning review within the first year of appointment.

Risk Management

The management of risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within a progressive, honest and open environment.Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable them to meet this responsibility.

  • BSE Accreditation in transoesophageal and/or stress echocardiography
