CONSULTANT IN ADULT CYSTIC FIBROSIS, BRONCHIECTASIS AND RESPIRATORY MEDICINE

Applications are invited to apply for the above post for the Respiratory Department at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The appointment is on a whole-time/part-time basis but applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our excellent CF and bronchiectasis team at OUH. This is a new post to reflect the increasing size of our service.

Main duties of the job

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

Clinical

The clinical component of the post comprises 8.5PAs with 1.5 SPAs. The post holder's duties will be at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. Specifically, the cystic fibrosis and respiratory in-patient components will be carried out at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Other respiratory components are delivered at the Churchill and Horton General Hospitals.

The clinical component of the role will provide senior expertise in managing adults with cystic fibrosis, as well as bronchiectasis/complex lung infection and general respiratory out-patients as well as in-patients with a 7 week ward duty period per annum. It is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations both on an inpatient and outpatient basis

Job responsibilities

Management

The management component of this role will support the Cystic Fibrosis Centre Director, Dr Chapman, under the direction of the Clinical Lead for Respiratory Medicine and the Clinical Director for Specialist Medicine.

In addition to these duties, the post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical department under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust and external accrediting bodies.

Teaching/Research/Audit

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of every-day clinical activity. The post-holders contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. It is expected that the postholder will contribute to departmental and trust audit and quality improvement. The trust has a strong QI department with an active QI Hub. The post holder will be expected to participate in regular Appraisal and Revalidation processes.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs, including revalidation. The post holder will be offered a mentor during the first 12-24 months.

Risk Management

The management of risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within a progressive, honest and open environment.

Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable them to meet this responsibility.

Staff should be familiar with the

and should make themselves familiar with the local response plan and their role within that response.

Responsibilities for Health & Safety

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations and Trust Policies and Procedures. All staff, both clinical and non-clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA.

  • Staff must decontaminate their hands prior to and after direct patient contact or contact with the patients surroundings.
  • Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.

  • MB BS or equivalent.
