Job summary
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a 10PA substantive Consultant Medical Oncologist with special interest in bone and soft tissue sarcoma and a second tumour site to be agreed with the successful candidate.
This post is for a Medical Oncologist with experience in Bone and Soft tissue sarcoma. The applicant will join The Oxford Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Service, which is one of five nationally approved centres for the treatment of rare primary bone tumours and sarcomas. It is one of the world's leading centres for the treatment of adults, adolescents and children with rare musculoskeletal disorders including primary malignant bone tumours and soft tissue sarcomas including GIST.
Applicants who are unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. Job share applicants are also welcomed. If appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with members of the sarcoma service including surgical, medical and clinical oncology colleagues, clinical nurse specialists, nurse and pharmacy prescribers, TYA team members and other multidisciplinary team members. The post holder will treat the full range of bone and soft tissue sarcomas and GIST including the management of inpatients receiving intensive therapies as part of the medical oncology sarcoma team.
Objectives of the post
- To provide a cancer service to patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas and GIST throughout the trust and referral region.
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of oncology.
- To work with colleagues at Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation.
- To provide a cancer service to patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas and GIST throughout the trust and referral region.
- To share with colleagues the responsibility of day-to-day management of oncology.
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit
- To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education.
- Teaching and training of junior staff, allied health professions and medical students

The Oxford Cancer and Haematology Centre wasopened in the Churchill Hospital in 2009, and brought together a wide range of cancer services including medical and clinical oncology, comprehensive surgical oncology services and broad range of diagnostic services. The department works closely with the University of Oxford research teams, working in partnership with NHS colleagues including the Oxford Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC).
The medical oncology sarcoma service has an established SACT service including inpatient and ambulatory chemotherapy to meet the needs of our patient population and an established genomic diagnostic service. We have an active portfolio of phase I and II sarcoma clinical trials which is well supported by our research team.
