Post: Orthopaedic Clinical Fellowship in Hip, knee & Sarcoma Surgery

Applications are invited from outstanding surgical candidates with FRCS (Tr&Orth), or equivalent, for the posts of Oxford Hip, Knee and Sarcoma Fellowships, based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Oxford.
These posts are suitable for surgeons who will have completed their specialist registrar training by the time of appointment and are seeking experience in complex hip, knee and sarcoma surgery prior to obtaining a consultant appointment.
We are offering three types of fellowship: Revision arthroplasty, soft tissue knee surgery, hip arthroscopy and sarcoma. All fellowships include a significant routine and complex primary arthroplasty component. In this recruitment round we will be considering applications for start dates in March 2024 and September 2024. Please note, fellowships commence on the first Monday of March and September. Fellowships are normally awarded for 12 months.
Candidates on appointment must hold a full registration with the GMC.
Main duties of the job
The purpose of the post is to enable the successful candidate to gain further experience in Hip, Knee and Sarcoma Surgery.
The post holder will gain clinical and operative skills under the direct supervision of the consultants within the Hip, Knee and Sarcoma Teams. The post holder will conduct clinics, operating lists, ward rounds and assist with clinical management with the consultants and on behalf of the consultants' during their absence.
To participate within the orthopaedic registrar on call rota, currently:
1:21 Resident on-call 0800-2030
1:21 Non-resident on-call 2000-0800
1:21 Resident on-call 2000-0830
Fellowships will broadly encompass one of four areas during each six month period: Revision arthroplasty, soft tissue knee surgery, sarcoma surgery or hip arthroscopy. Fellowships commence on the first Monday of March and September, the applicant's preferred start month and year should be included in the supplementary information section.
About us
Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a teaching hospital and is 1 of 4 sites of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It provides a service for the clinical management of musculoskeletal problems and its facilities include Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, Rehabilitation and a specialised diagnostic service in Histopathology and Medical Imaging.
There are 5 orthopaedic in-patient wards, 1 in-patient bone infection unit, HDU/Recovery with an overall total of 196 beds, 8 operating theatres and a purpose built day surgery unit.
The hospital takes 5000 admissions each year, sees 30,000 outpatients, either on the premises or in peripheral clinics, it is a tertiary referral centre for specialist orthopaedics and physical rehabilitation. Patients are referred from the Oxfordshire district, nationally and internationally.
The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a hospital site which has grown considerably over recent years and which is presently generating more work. It is expected that this will continue and promote the development of specialist activity within the field of orthopaedics.

- Ability to organise oneself, to manage time and tasks and prioritise clinical needs within limitations of experience.
- Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate according to level of experience
- Sound note keeping skills
- Computing skills: ability to use word processor, spreadsheet, presentation software, web browser and electronic patient record software
- Validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date
