About us
The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre
Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is a prestigious teaching hospital, part of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We provide academically led acute and specialist rheumatology and orthopaedic services around Oxfordshire and throughout the UK.
The centre is housed on the same grounds as the Botnar Research Institute- leading experts in the field of musculoskeletal research. It also has clinical and research links with the John Radcliffe Hospital Trauma department. All three centres receive support from NIHR and the Medical Research Council. The academic rheumatology department has been recognised as a EULAR Centre of Excellence since 2015. The department provides formal and informal teaching for Oxford University medical undergraduates.
The rheumatology department has a dedicated Day Unit and access to in-patient beds on one of 3 orthopaedic in-patient wards. We have a multipurpose out- patient suite where most rheumatology clinics are held. The hospital averages 5000 admissions each year and the rheumatology department provides approximately 17,500 consultations per year. We do not have an emergency department but we get urgent rheumatology referrals from the neighbouring hospitals in the area and we are also a tertiary referral centre for rheumatology, specialist orthopaedics and physical rehabilitation.
