CHILDREN'S AMBULATORY CARE

BAND 3 Paediatric Phlebotomist

This post is based in Children's Outpatients in the Children's Hospital. There will also be some responsibility for supporting the inpatient wards and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Outpatient Department. Our outpatient departments are currently open from 8-6 Monday-Friday and a phlebotomy service is provided within these times.

We are looking for an enthusiastic person with excellent organisational, communication and time management skills to join our phlebotomy team. You must be able to prioritise your own workload and enjoy working as part of a team.

The role includes providing a phlebotomy service to children attending for outpatient appointments, GP referrals and inpatients. You will work as part of a small team to provide an excellent service. You will work closely with the nursing team, medical staff and play specialists. Duties will also include managing the bookings diary.

You will need to be prepared to work flexibly according to the needs of the service.

Previous experience in phlebotomy is essential. Experience within a paediatric setting is desirable however full training/support/supervision can be arranged to develop and support your skills .

Main duties of the job

  • To take venous blood and capillary specimens according to the Trust's policies and procedures and ensuring the minimum of pain and discomfort to the child.
  • To record the collection of samples on the Electronic Patient System.
  • To ensure that the samples are appropriate for the investigations requested and that they are transported to the appropriate laboratory in a timely fashion.
  • Take responsibility for the booking in and running of Phlebotomy clinics, liaising with parents when necessary.
  • Maintain cleanliness and stock levels within clinical areas.
  • To maintain privacy and dignity and patient confidentiality at all times.
  • To maintain effective communication with clinical staff and other service providers.

He/she will ensure care is given that recognises not only individual needs but also their social, psychological and cultural needs.The post holder will be expected to play an active role in continuing to develop a safe and effective service.

RESPONSIBILITIES
