JOB TITLE: Locum Consultant in Ophthalmology (medical retina)

We are looking for a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in medical retina to join our established team of 24 Consultant and to work in the Oxford Eye Hospital for a 6 month fixed-term contract initially. There may be an opportunity to extend the locum contract and we anticipate further expansion of the substantive consultants soon.

Main duties of the job

The Oxford Eye Hospital provides a medical retina service to the Oxfordshire Population This post is to provide consultant level cover in medical retina. There are 7 consultants who currently support the medical retina service (some are part time) and also a senior specialist in diabetic retinopathy. There are 2 medical retina fellows and optometrists with extended roles as well as Deanery trainees who work in the service. The intravitreal injection service is provided by allied health professionals. We have separate uveitis, ocular oncology and vitreoretinal services outside the scope of this post.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The postholders duties will be primarily at John Radcliffe Hospital but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trusts locations.

Clinical Duties of post

Aims and responsibilities:The basis for this post is to provide medical retina Services for the Oxford Eye Hospital.

Clinical:The post-holders duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The Oxford Eye Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities including the full gamut of imaging technologies. Our medical retina department is using virtual clinics in addition to face to face appointments.

Facilities for studying and training:The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trusts. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trusts, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

Teaching/Research:Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programs for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holders contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. The post-holder would be expected to engage and collaborate with clinical colleagues in areas of overlap to support clinical research within the department.

Clinical Governance:The post-holders will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development:The post-holder will be required to keep fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice, and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. They will need to fully comply with appraisal and revalidation processes. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the current Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant continuing medical education (CME) courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

Management:The post-holder will be required to work within the Trusts management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources, must have prior agreement with the Trust. They will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients, and the running of their clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or clinical director.
