Job responsibilities

ClinicalThis post will work within a team of consultant colleagues to provide a comprehensive bone and soft tissue pathology service in the Oxford University Hospitals, including performing or supervisingcut ups, microscopy, or other diagnostic techniques, reporting cases, and supporting clinical meetings and case discussions.

A willingness to adopt new diagnostic techniques intoCellular Pathology and undertake training where necessary is essential. The department is advanced in the adoption of digital pathology.Oxford University Hospitals is the hub of the South 4 Pathology Partnership.

Cellular Pathology across the South 4 Pathology Partnership works in collaboration. Support of colleagues and services in the partner trusts will be an increasing component of the post as digital pathology and an integrated laboratory information management system facilitate closer working across the sites.

As a consultant in a specialist centre, the appointee will be expected to develop sufficient expertise to support complex referral cases, and to work closely with colleagues to assure the quality of thework of the whole team.

The Bone and Soft Tissue team will also work across the wider specialtynetwork in England.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and inclinical examinations.

It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity.The post-holders contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The post-holder will be required to keep themselves fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions ofService, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

ManagementThe post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. They will undertake the administrative duties associated with the running of their service under the direction of the Clinical Lead, Clinical Director and operationalmanagers.

Qualifications/Training

Essential

• Full GMC registration with licence to practice
• FRCPath or equivalent
• Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
• Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
• Specialist training in Bone and Soft Tissue pathology

• Higher Medical Degree

Experience

Essential

• Experience of complex histopathology cases in Bone and Soft Tissue pathology
• Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.

• Independent reporting of complex histopathology cases in Bone and Soft Tissue pathology

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

• Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
• Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management.
• Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
• Willingness to share cases and seek second opinions appropriately
• Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training.
• Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
• Understanding of management roles in NHS pathology and willingness to engage with and participate in management
• Good spoken and written English.
• Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
