Job summary

We have two OPHTHALMOLOGY clinical fellowships available from the 2nd August 2023 at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

POST 1: part-time at 80% WTE basis (4 days per week)

POST 2: 100% full time but applications are welcome from those who wish to job share.

The posts are suitable for doctors who have completed their training, but seek experience in Ophthalmology. These are not posts that are approved for training by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. Candidates are welcome to visit the department and are invited to contact Mrs Stella Hornby or Jonathan Norris at the West Wing, Oxford Eye Hospital, John Radcliffe Hospital.

Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work 4 days per week or full-time will be eligible to be considered for the posts. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant supervisors. Suitably qualified job-share candidates will be considered.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

Clinical

The postholder's duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, but their presence may from time-to-time be required in other parts of the Trust, such as the Horton Hospital in Banbury or Wantage Community Hospital.

Teaching/Research/Audit

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The Oxford Eye Hospital is an internationally recognized centre of excellence in research, particularly in neonatal vitreoretinal surgery, gene therapy, electronic retinal implants and imaging. Candidates would be expected to engage in some research activity while in post. Additional funding to attend conferences will be provided if Oxford-based research is being presented, for instance, at Euretina or ARVO.

The Oxford Eye Hospital (OEH) welcomes applications for these two clinical fellowships offering advanced training in a range of specialties including Vitreoretinal surgery, Medical Retina, Oculoplastics, Glaucoma and other opportunities.

As well as providing for general ophthalmic needs of the local population, OEH receives tertiary and quaternary referrals of complex disease across all subspecialties so that Fellows can expect a broad exposure across medical and surgical ophthalmology.

Each fellowship comprises a bespoke exposure to the subspecialtywith an expectation of a small contributionto support the emergency eye department, lasers and intravitreal injection services(depending on fellowship post) including on-call commitments(general and VR on-calls with pay banding supplements).

OEH and its consultant body have an active research portfolio, including clinical trials in retinal gene therapy, stem cells and robotic eye surgery and phenotype genotype correlation. TheNuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology provides direct contact with university academicsworking in many areas of genetics, immunology andCRISPR gene editingtechnology. Participation in research through the writing up of clinical studies and case reports is encouraged.
