Applications are invited to apply for the above posts in Dermatology at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH). The post is available from Autumn 2023 for 12 months, based at the Department of Dermatology, Churchill Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
We are pleased to be able to advertise for a full-time dermatology clinical fellow to join our experienced dermatology team in Oxford. Located within the Thames Valley, we are the training centre for Thames Valley Specialty Registrars in Dermatology. Oxford is a recognised centre of excellence in numerous areas of dermatology. With one of the highest incidences of melanoma in the UK, we have state of the art surgical, diagnostic and laboratory facilities in a purpose-built unit. We have excellent on-site links with plastic surgery, with a centralised head and neck skin cancer service. We are paediatric dermatology centre of excellence and undertake dedicated paediatric dermatology clinics and Teenage and Young Adolescent Clinics and have close links with paediatrics team
Main duties of the job
Training and Activity
We have a proven track record in training previous fellows and specialty trainees to ensure they achieve their career aims including CESR posts and National Training Numbers. Trainees within the department include Foundation Year 1s, GVTS, clinical fellows, dermatology specialty registrars, and post-CCT Mohs' surgery fellows. We train all the specialty registrars on the Oxford Rotation in all aspects of dermatology including skin cancer surgery. We train GPs with specialist interest in dermatology as well as Thames Valley GPVTS trainees on the dermatology rotation. We have links with the Australian College of Dermatology and have an Australian dermatology registrar who rotates to Oxford for training. We have trained Australian, Singaporean and New Zealand registrars in surgical Mohs fellowships in the past and have offered surgical sabbaticals to a number of consultants from Europe, Canada and Russia
Daily consultant led skin cancer clinics are held with ~35-40 patients reviewed per day in conjunction with parallel consultant led surgical lists and Mohs micrographic surgery lists. General consultant led dermatology clinics run daily with 20 to 25 patients seen per clinic

The Department of Dermatology is a stand-alone building annexed to the main hospital via a link corridor and is adjacent to the new Oxford Cancer Centre. We are fortunate to have a full range of facilities on site to support the dermatology clinical fellow:
Outpatients area:
Dedicated dermatology consultation rooms
Theatre suite
We have a dedicated skin surgery suite, which includes:
- 4 dedicated skin surgical theatres all with integrated oxygen and suction facilities. PDT is also available in nurse-led clinics.
- 3 bed recovery area with integrated oxygen and suction facilities.
- Office area
Minor-op room
A separate biopsy room is used for minor biopsies.
Post-op dressing room
All post-op wounds are seen in this dedicated area.
Wound care suite
All patients with leg ulcers or chronic wounds are reviewed in this recently refurbished dedicated 2 bed area.
Photography studio
The Medical Illustration Department run a photographic studio in the department.
Patch Testing Suite
To undertake patch testing
Phototherapy unit.
Undertake UVB, PUVA whole body, and hand foot PUVA phototherapy
Research facilities:
Laboratory
The first floor of the dermatology unit includes a dedicated laboratory where all Mohs sections are fully processed and reported on.
Microscopes
There are two separate microscopes:
- Triple & double headed microscopes are used for interpretation, reporting and teaching of Mohs cases
Seminar Room
Digital projection is available for discussion of histopathology cases in the weekly pathology review meeting. This enables clinical, dermoscopic and histopathological correlation to be available for all suspicious pigmented tumours that are excised. We have recently upgraded the AV equipment.
Office Space
Each member of medical staff has an allocated desk and computer with online access.
Staffing
The service is supported by a highly skilled nursing team, who help support day case & complex surgical cases. There are a number of long-term experienced qualified nurses and healthcare assistants, who play a vital role in the efficient running of the service and providing dressings support.
We are lucky to be supported by 2 MacMillan skin cancer nurse specialists, who are critical in supporting patients in the department as well as with their treatment with other specialities. Additionally, we have dedicated administrative staff to help run the service including an MDT co-ordinator who is based within the Department.
