Job summary

Aims and responsibilities:

  • Act as source and contact point for information about the unit, and clinical issues arising from the assessment and treatment of their child
  • Screen and triage all incoming mail (post and electronic) for urgent information/ referrals.
  • Liaise verbally and/or in writing with members of multidisciplinary team: ophthalmology, ENT, MFOS, neurosurgery, genetics, anaesthetics and radiology re referrals, OPA/IP assessments/investigations etc.
  • Liaise verbally and in writing with other local and non-local carers regarding early communication of findings, requests for follow-up/investigation/further information.
  • Assist with arranging joint appointments with other specialities.
  • Coordinate the diary regularly for updates on staff leave/availability, operating lists, clinics etc.
  • Attend NHS England meetings as/when required

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

  • Organising out-patient/in-patient appointments/investigations.
  • Primary point of contact for urgent/non-urgent GP/consultant/allied health professional referrals.
  • Request CT/MRI and other radiology investigations.
  • Book and run weekly GA CT scan lists, contact families, ward, anaesthetist, other involved parties. Send detailed appointment letters.
  • After every craniofacial clinic review notes and action plans made by consultant/team.
  • Co-ordinate local radiological investigations for distant resident patients where appropriate. Obtain results for review. Request imaging on the IEP and then ensure saved onto PACS by logging call with PACS team.
  • Assist with clinical discussions required for preliminary planning of surgical lists.
  • Co-ordinate and work with Professor A Wilkie and Dr D Shears regarding genetic aspects of craniosynostosis and if research nurse unavailable:
  • Pre-operative discussion and consent of parents for genetic diagnostic analysis and research if required. GCP training required.
  • Coordinate/perform the collection of samples at surgery and from parents.
  • Assess likely genetics test requirements (liaising with AW and DS if necessary). Then prepare packs for consent and blood collection at time of surgery.
