Job summary
The Oxford Centre for Genomic Medicine (OxGEM) based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford is seeking an enthusiastic practitioner to join our dynamic team . The post holder will work closely with our "General Genetics" team to gather medical and family history information in a compassionate manner in preparation for a Clinical Genetics appointment with either a Consultant Clinical Geneticist or Genetic Counsellor. This will involve: taking family histories from patients; explaining the genetic appointment and genetic testing process; obtaining relevant medical records; sending emails and requesting blood samples prior to appointment as necessary. The post holder will require initiative and the ability to work autonomously, with support from the wider clinical team. Strong organisational skills and familiarity with computers are important, as well as compassionate communication skills (spoken and written) and team working ability in accordance with OUH Trust Values. There is an existing network of family history nurses/coordinators in OUH Trust. The successful post holder will receive education and training in clinical genetics/genomics and genetic software. While this post does not provide training or lead to registration as a Genetic Counsellor, it does meet the standard required for successful for revalidation with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Main duties of the job
*Sensitively elicit an accurate personal and family medical history by telephone or video appointment, with an awareness that patients may have significant cognitive disability and/or challenging personal circumstances related to the referral reason which may impact on the telephone/video consultation
*Confirm diagnoses of patient and relatives prior to clinic appointment to ensure clinical accuracy in both routine and urgent situations
*Explain and organise a limited number of genetic tests for patients such as arrays on behalf of the supervising genetics professional
*Provide training and education for students and trainees within clinical genetics as well as nursing and other healthcare professionals outside of clinical genetics to support the NHS genomic medicine service.

Draw family history diagrams both on paper and or software while speaking to a patient over the phone, checking and augmenting family history drawings produced by patient facing software
