Job summary
Band 5 Registered Nurses/Operating Department Practitioners:
There are 3 Operating Theatre Departments within this division based at the John Radcliffe Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, where you can gain a wide variety of experience in anaesthetics, surgery and/or recovery.
The John Radcliffe Main Operating Theatre Department is a 6 theatre unit where routine and emergency surgery (general, gynae, spinal) takes place, predominately for adults. It is a tertiary referral centre for vascular surgery and a major trauma centre.
The West Wing Operating Theatre Department is a 14-theatre unit and provides elective and emergency care for adults and children. It is one of four highly specialised craniofacial centres in the UK, one of seven specialist units for cleft lip & palate surgery. It is a tertiary referral centre for neurosurgery and the unit is recognised for ground-breaking work in ophthalmology surgery. Other specialities include ENT, Maxilla-Facial and children (general surgery & orthopaedics).
The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre is an 8 theatre unit providing care for adult patients. The NOC has a world-wide reputation for excellence in orthopaedics.The hospital also undertakes specialist services such as the treatment of bone infection, bone tumours and limb reconstruction.
Main duties of the job
Anaesthetics
- Work alongside the anaesthetist in caring for patients in the administration and maintenance of general, regional and local anaesthetics
- Preparation of a wide range of specialist equipment such as anaesthetic machines and devices, to safely secure the patient's airway during anaesthesia and support maintenance of their cardio-vascular stability
- Monitor, assess and respond to changes in the patient condition as required, evaluating care provided
Surgery
- Work alongside the surgeon in caring for patients by anticipating the requirements of the surgical team and responding effectively
- Prepare all the necessary instruments and equipment for specialist surgery
- Be responsible for surgical instruments, equipment, swabs, needles and sundries
Recovery
- Support the patient on their arrival into the recovery unit
- Monitor the patient's condition during the immediate post-operative phase and respond to changes as required
- Assess the patient in order to ensure they can be safely discharged to a ward area
Rotation through more than one area of practice is actively encouraged.
