CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC RESPIRATORY MEDICINE
Applications are invited for the above post in the Department of Paediatrics at the Oxford Children's Hospital, Level 2, Oxford OX3 9DU.
This is vacancy has arisen due to a current consultant leaving. The post holder will join as one of 3 specialist paediatric respiratory consultants working within a multidisciplinary team that also includes 5 specialist nurses, 3 physiotherapists, 2 dieticians, a psychologist, a respiratory physiologist and other support staff. We are a dynamic and committed team who together provide a comprehensive paediatric respiratory service for Oxfordshire, the Thames Valley and Northamptonshire.
The majority of the postholder's time will be spent at the Children's Hospital in Oxford. One consultant also delivers a regular clinic at the Horton Hospital in Banbury.

Main duties of the job
Clinical
The postholder will provide, with a multi-disciplinary team including 3 consultant colleagues, a comprehensive paediatric respiratory service for children in the Thames Valley and Northamptonshire (approximate population 2 million). The services offered include:
- regional cystic fibrosis centre
- respiratory sleep service
- non-invasive respiratory support service (CPAP and BiPAP)
- long term ventilation via tracheostomy
- care of children with tracheostomies
- management of empyema and other respiratory infections
- management of asthma
- management of chronic lung disease
- investigation of respiratory problems
- respiratory support to the ITU, cleft service, craniofacial service, neuromuscular service, ENT service, oncology service, cardiology service.
Outreach cystic fibrosis clinics are provided at 5 network clinics. There is a quarterly joint cleft palate clinic and a quarterly transitional clinic with the Oxford adult cystic fibrosis service.

Paediatric respiratory medicine in Oxford
The paediatric respiratory service provides secondary level care for the local population of Oxfordshire and tertiary care to Oxfordshire and the Thames Valley and parts of Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire. The post-holder will be expected to take responsibility for children with all types of respiratory problems.
We accept acute inpatient referrals from the Thames valley and beyond for children with acute and chronic respiratory disease. The Oxford paediatric cystic fibrosis network cares for 178 children with cystic fibrosis; 66 of these children are full care patients in Oxford, and the remainder are shared care with local clinics in Reading, High Wycombe, Wexham Park, Milton Keynes and Northampton. All children attend Oxford once per year for annual review and are seen in their local clinics on at least one other occasion by the visiting Oxford multidisciplinary team. There are strong links with the Oxford adult CF team and we hold a joint regional meeting once per year.
We carry out over 600 sleep studies each year in children with a wide range of underlying problems including obstructive sleep apnoea, chronic lung disease, apnoea of unknown cause, neuromuscular weakness, and craniofacial and palate disorders. We have strong links with the craniofacial team (Oxford is one of 4 national centres for craniofacial surgery), the ENT service and the neuromuscular team. Currently, we care for 84 children at home on non-invasive respiratory support or support via a tracheostomy, the majority with either chronic lung disease or hypoventilation associated with neuromuscular weakness.
Teaching/Research
Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity.The post-holders contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.
The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust forms a Biomedical Research Centre in partnership with the University of Oxford and research activity is encouraged. There is ample opportunity for research collaboration with both the clinical and basic science Oxford University departmentswhere there are particular strengths in Experimental Psychology, Infectious Disease, Molecular Genetics and Epidemiology. There is an active research programme in adult respiratory medicine research.
Clinical Governance
The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional Development
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditionsof Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.
Management
The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical department under the direction of thelead clinician and/or directorate chair.
