Job summary
We are seeking a highly capable Occupational Therapist to join our Acute Neurosciences Therapy team. The Acute Neurosciences Team Lead Occupational Therapy post will work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary teams on both the 16-bedded Neurosciences intensive care unit and 75-bedded ward to deliver early high-quality specialist assessments and rehabilitation. They will work as a member of the Acute Neurosciences Therapy team and provide leadership for occupational therapy services across two clinical areas as well as managing a clinical caseload of highly complex neurosurgical and neuro-medical patients.
They will be responsible for supervising and teaching Occupational Therapists, Therapy Assistants and Occupational Therapy students and initiating and participating in audit, quality improvement and evidence-based projects.
Main duties of the job
- To deploy advanced knowledge, skills, and experience to effectively lead the occupational therapy acute neurosciences team across 7 days a week.
- Use advanced clinical reasoning skills to provide specialist therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation as part of a multidisciplinary acute neurosciences team.
- Provide team leadership, supervision and appraisal to occupational therapists, therapy assistants and students.
- Maintain a clinical caseload of highly complex patients as an autonomous practitioner.
- Contribute to team leadership, service development, and quality assurance in acute neurosciences services.
- Devise and oversee the delivery of service improvement projects seeking advances in therapeutic and rehabilitative practice.
To engage and participate in the operational, governance and research activities of the Therapies clinical service unit.

Clinical practice
- To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of own professional practice.
- To undertake comprehensive assessments of patients who have had neurological injury, illness, and impairments, including those with highly complex presentations, and develop agreed problem lists and holistic treatment plans.
- Use advanced clinical reasoning skills, knowledge of evidence-based practice and clinical expertise to determine appropriate rehabilitation programmes and discharge/continuing care plans.
- To be responsible and accountable for the occupational therapy team clinical activity and performance in the delivery of acute neurosciences rehabilitation.
- To oversee the quality and efficiency of the teams clinical resources providing support to less experienced occupational therapists.
- To assess and monitor patients to maximise progress through the acute phase of their rehabilitation providing the optimal chance of recovery and retrieval of physical and cognitive function.
- To work within the Mental Capacity Act and Liberty Protection Safeguards, as legal frameworks protecting patients and staff where mental capacity is absent and deprivation of liberty orders are in place.
