Job summary

Surgical Care Practitioner, Churchill Theatres, Band 7

We are looking for a qualified Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) to join our team at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford. We currently have one trainee SCP who will be competing training and two new trainees in post. The main focus of this team's work is assisting with robotic surgery. Our robotic program has expanded greatly in the last year and now includes Urology, Colorectal, Upper GI, and HPB. The SCP team also assists with breast surgery each week. The majority of your time will be spent in the operating theatre working with multiple specialities. There will also be the potential to become involved in a small element of non-theatre work.

You will need to have experience of working in theatres at a senior level with SCP Masters level qualification in the UK. You will ideally to have robotics experience in your current or previous role.

You will need to be flexible and adaptable, have a good understanding of clinical standards and most importantly, unlimited enthusiasm.

You must possess proven leadership, communication and organisational skills and be a highly effective role model within the clinical area. You should have a clear understanding of what the SCP role entails and how it can be utilised within a multi-disciplinary team

Main duties of the job

Clinical Practice

  • Will be involved in team completion of surgical safety checklist for all surgical procedures as part of the five steps to safer surgery.
  • To assist with patient positioning for surgery, including tissue viability assessment.
  • To prepare the patient for surgery, including clipping of body hair, preparation of the skin and infiltration of local anaesthetic and application of drapes.
  • To perform the extended role of male/female urethral catheterisation when required, once training is completed and competency can be demonstrated.
  • To contribute to the efficiency of the operating list through continuity and expertise.

  • To liaise with medical, theatre, ward, clerical and x-ray staff on relevant issues such as theatre lists.

  • To assess patients pre operatively, intra-operatively and post-operatively, including relevant surgical speciality clinic participation, pre-operative visiting, and telephone follow up as required

  • To evaluate surgical options and make appropriate decisions, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

  • To act as the patients advocate and ensure that their dignity is respected and their wishes are observed.

  • To provide ongoing continuity of care within the multidisciplinary team.

  • To evaluate and maintain quality of care with particular reference to wound care and takes appropriate action to minimise complications.

  • To provide intra-operative support to patients in the operating theatre and during transfer to the recovery unit.
