Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Paediatric Neurosciences Operational Delivery Network. The Epilepsy or experienced Neurosciences Nurse/AHP / Mental Health Practitioner for Epilepsy Workstreams and Education will play a pivotal role in supporting the delivery of the CYP Transformation project for Epilepsy across Paediatric Neurosciences South Operational Delivery Network (PNS ODN). The post holders will take a lead in co-ordinating key Epilepsy workstreams outlined in the recommendations of Epilepsy 12. These four key areas of improvement include:

  • Mental Health Screening and Access to Psychological Support
  • Access to Tertiary services Including Surgery
  • Transition from Paediatric to Adult Services
  • Variations in Epilepsy Care

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in collaboration with PNS ODN specialist neurosciences teams to lead, develop, & co-ordinate the CYP Epilepsy Transformation Project, which was initiated to explore and promote a whole service approach to the care of a child and young person with Epilepsy, ensuring equity of epilepsy care and access to services across PNS ODN region in line with the Epilepsy 12 recommendations.

The post holder will

  1. Ensure robust data is collected locally and is available to inform commissioners/services managers.
  2. Map the current services and provision across the network for all 4 key areas of improvement.
  3. Identify, explore and initiate a whole service approach to the care of a child with Epilepsy
  4. Ensure commissioning involvement in the planning of care pathways for children with Epilepsy.
  5. Ensure equity of pathways and access to services for all South PNS ODN children requiring mental health screening and access to psychological support.
  6. Work collaboratively with key provides and specialist interest groups to develop standardised patient pathways between secondary and tertiary care.
  7. Explore and initiate a network approach to transition from paediatric to adult epilepsy services.
  8. Support the delivery of multidisciplinary education and training programmes on key neurosciences topics

The post holders will work in collaboration with the PNS ODN team and key stakeholders to define educational priorities aligned with the key workstreams and related Neuroscience ODN projects, reflective of needs analysi.

Education and training delivery will evolve as projects develop but may include:

  • Supporting alignment with emerging PNS ODN pathways, guidelines or policies
  • Developing competency packages, train the trainer sessions
  • Supporting evidence based practice

The post holder will support the annual review/evaluation of the PNS ODN education programme.

Although the role will be largely home based, there may an expectation for the post holder to travel across the PNS ODN to deliver education and training.

The post holder will be responsible for regular updating and monitoring of own skills and knowledge.

The post holder will also work very closely with Network PNS leads and teams across neighbouring ODN regions, in particular London, South East and East of England, rationalising resources and reducing variation in clinical care and education.

Professional, Leadership and Management requirements

The post holder will provide oversight leadership of the South PNS ODN Epilepsy Project, supporting providers and Epilepsy specialist teams to ensure delivery of key outcomes while maintaining awareness of local politics & sensitivity around potential local pathway changes.

Acts as a catalyst for change, challenging professional and organisational boundaries, to meet the needs of children and their families.

Puts in place systems to monitor service delivery and outcome measures. Reports on key performance indicators, evaluation of programmes and stakeholder feedback.

Participates in maintaining Network patient statistics/databases facilitating evaluation of the role.

Facilitate a culture of collaborative working, rationalisation of resources and communication between stakeholders involved with Epilepsy Pathways across South PNS ODN.

Leadthe management of change and support others in the process; encourage new ideas anddevelopments andtake responsibility for evaluating the outcome of project work.

Manages own workload and is accountable for own performance and resource allocation.

Actas a professional representative on behalf of the South PNS ODN Paediatric both regionally and nationally in relevant forums, networking with other PNS professionals throughout the UK, joining appropriate organisations in order to collaborate, share and benchmark practices and initiatives.

Any identified areas of risk or non-compliance will be escalated via appropriate channels.

Clinical Practice

Demonstrate recent clinical expertise and experience caring for children with epilepsy.

Practice as a professional senior nurse/ AHP /Mental Health Practitioner with competence, confidence, authority and expertise,acting as a credible role model within the professional code of conduct.

Provide expert knowledge and clinical competence ensuring point of care delivery is of a high standard and evidenced based.
