CONSULTANT IN - EMERGENCY MEDICINE

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

The service provision is split between two sites. The John Radcliffe Hospital is a designated 'Major Trauma Centre' with the full range of secondary and tertiary specialties and annual ED attendances of over 90,000, serving a secondary care population of around 400,000. Overnight Trauma cover is delivered by ED/ Trauma ST4 and above, with Consultant on-call cover. There is a resident Stroke thrombolysis team with access to a full range of tertiary specialists.

Main duties of the job

The Department works to deliver high quality care as locally as possible. Some pathways (eg for hyper-acute stroke, acute myocardial infarction, major trauma and surgery) reflect the enhanced capabilities of the JRH - patients presenting to the HH with those conditions undergo emergency assessment, stabilisation and transfer if appropriate. At the JRH, resident specialist teams deliver stroke thrombolysis and coronary angioplasty. The development of a World Class Trauma network for the region with the JRH at its hub is well advanced. We have just completed estate works which has provided us with a new Ambulatory and Trolley Assessment Area, an expanded Paediatric department and a brand new state of the art 9 bedded Resuscitation Area, with adjacent CT scanning facility, shock suite, dedicated paediatric room and isolation facilities.

We are seeking the highest quality senior medical staff at both sites: leaders in clinical care, teaching, research and service development who can contribute enthusiastically to meeting the local challenges.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical

The Emergency Department operates from two sites: the John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford (JRH) and the Horton Hospital Banbury (HH).

The JRH is a designated Major Trauma Centre with the full range of secondary and tertiary specialties and annual ED attendances of over 110,000, serving a secondary care population of ~400,000. The Major Trauma response is enhanced by the presence of a 24-7 resident Trauma consultant and team. There is a resident Stroke thrombolysis team

The HH is a designated Local A&E, open 24-7, with annual attendances of almost 55,000, serving a population of ~200,000. There is close functional integration with the JRH, and very close working relationships with the range of downstream acute specialties on site including Acute Medicine, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics and Gynaecology. The department prides itself on being a close knit, friendly and progressive department which is well resourced offering a high level of training to junior staff. The department has recently undergone a series of works to provide additional majors cubicles and a dedicated Paediatric area.

We encourage applicants who have a preference for working predominantly on either the JRH or on the HH site. Where such a site focus is agreed, we would expect sessions (up to 50

%) to be delivered at the partner hospital as an aid to effective integration, service development and professional development.

We encourage applicants to tell us where their professional interests lie and where possible we will reflect them in job planning. Such interests might be in teaching, training, service development or in a clinical area such as Trauma care or Paediatrics. Applicants with a deeper experience of such areas (possibly including dual accreditation) are very much encouraged, as are those with a high level of generic capability. Applicants with a particular interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine are encouraged.
