Job summary
The post holder's duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Appointment is to the Trust and the post holder must be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations if the need arises. Currently Paediatric Emergency Medicine is only delivered on John Radcliffe Site.
Main duties of the job
The John Radcliffe Hospital PED has been recently expanded and refurbished, and has dedicated, self-contained 16 bedded area for children, plus a new waiting area open 24 hours 7 days a week. The Department sees approximately 30,000 new patients per annum. The work of the department covers the whole range of emergency medicine problems and all grades of severity of conditions. Approximately 60% of the workload is minor/major trauma, and 40% medical Paediatrics. In the under 2 year-olds, the proportions are 50% and 50% respectively. The John Radcliffe has been assigned as a Major Trauma Centre.
The John Radcliffe has been accredited as a sub-specialty training centre for Paediatric Emergency Medicine, both by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
The PED sees and assesses all undifferentiated self-presenters over the age of six months and all injured children. Children under a year of age and those who are referred by their GP will be seen in PED Majors or Children's CDU capacity permitting by the attending Paediatric team. Development of specific links within primary care would also be encouraged.

The post holder will be integral to both delivery of the current service and the development of the new integrated service and will be responsible for all aspects of paediatric emergency care within the PED.
