About us

Banbury is a growing market town set in a surrounding agricultural community. The present population served is estimated variously at some 150,000 people depending on the specialty concerned. Over the next decade this population is expected to rise following the completion of the M40 motorway to Birmingham. The main communities served are Banbury, Bicester, Chipping Norton, Brackley, Shipston-on-Stour, a rural community. The catchment area with other District General Hospitals means that there is an overlap of service provision within about a 12 mile radius of Banbury. There is also a relatively high number of major country towns with eleven Community Hospitals.

The hospital provides a total of 226 beds for in-patient care. The hospital provides trauma and orthopaedic surgery, gynaecology, paediatrics, general medicine, ENT, Oral Surgery and an MLU. There are 15 beds in the Elms Clinic for psychiatric patients which is part of the Mental Health Unit. The phased modernisation programme over the last twenty years for the hospital has provided new facilities for pathology and radiology, ward accommodation for trauma and orthopaedics and general medicine with a purpose built intensive care unit. The hospital has a modern four operating theatre complex with integral theatre sterile supply unit and recovery facilities. There is a newly opened Day Case Unit with sixteen beds. A new Accident and Emergency department funded by public appeal was opened in 1989.
