Applications are invited to apply for the above post of Consultant Immunologist with an interest in allergy at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH). The post is based at the Departments of Immunology & Dermatology, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

  1. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES:

The post-holder's duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe & Churchill Hospitals, however it is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations.

Clinical

The post holder's principal duties are based at the John Radcliffe and the Churchill (total of 10 PA) comprising a mix of 8.5 clinical PAs and 1.5 supporting PA's. The clinical PA s require the appointee to perform a mixture of allergy and immunology clinics, with allergy predominating. The immunology clinics will focus on primary and secondary immunodeficiency while allergy clinics will be dedicated to immunotherapy, drug allergy, general allergy (inhalants, foods) and anaphylaxis. A separate PA is allocated for drug and food challenges.

There are no laboratory sessions included in the job plan though opportunities for close liaison with the clinical immunology laboratory exist and would be encouraged.

It is a condition of the appointment that the post holder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations.

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holders contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Outline Job Plan Weekly provisional Programmed Activities

An indicative timetable and job plan is attached. The final job plan for the post can be negotiated and agreed with the clinical lead upon appointment.

NB Planned new clinic room availability in 2019/20 may allow potential job-plan & clinic provision flexibility.

This is an indicative job plan, the actual initial job plan worked will be negotiated with the Clinical Director upon appointment.

Annual and study leave arrangements must be co-ordinated within the specialty to ensure there is an acceptable level of consultant cover.

On-call is non-resident, principally offering telephone advice so no in lieu time is offered for weekend work. Time off in lieu is offered for additional DCC clinical workload above that agreed in the final job-plan.

Service Description

The Clinical Immunology Service for the Oxford Deanery covers the district of the four counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire, making a population total of just under 3 million. The Department provides clinical and laboratory services to a population of 2.5million in the catchment area of the equivalent of the Thames Valley Strategic Health Authority.

The NHS Department of Clinical Immunology provides a tertiary regional service to a population of ~1.4 million. It provides comprehensive treatment of immunological diseases, in particular primary and secondary immune deficiencies, systemic autoimmune diseases and vasculitis (jointly with rheumatology) and complex allergies. The department manages the Department of Health's demand management plan for Intravenous Immunoglobulin for a number of Trusts (OUH, Milton Keynes GH, Buckinghamshire hospitals, Royal Berkshire Hospital and Northampton General Hospital) with one of the consultants designated as the lead.

The department provides a comprehensive specialist allergy service encompassing drug allergy, anaesthetic allergy, general allergy (inhalants, foods), anaphylaxis and venom immunotherapy. It is registered with the UK Improving Quality in Allergy Services accreditation scheme and is actively working towards accreditation.

The Clinical Immunology service was the first in the UK to be re-accredited by the Royal College of Physicians Quality in Primary Immunodeficiency Services scheme (QPIDS), in addition to badges of international recognition as a Centre of Excellence from the US Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FOCIS).

In 2008, the clinical activities were moved to refurbished accommodation on the John Radcliffe Hospital site, with 8 stations for day care (immunoglobulin therapies for replacement and immunomodulation, desensitisation and skin testing) and appropriate outpatient facilities for assessment clinics.

The regional Immunology Laboratory, at the Churchill Hospital, provides a comprehensive diagnostic service. The Laboratory is accredited by UKAS and participates in all relevant EQA schemes.

The department is accredited by a number of bodies for medical and scientific training JRCPTB for specialty registrars, IBMS and HPC for healthcare scientists

Main Conditions of Service

The post is covered by the national 2003 Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales) and the Conditions of Service determined by the General Whitley Council for the Health Services (Great Britain), as amended from time to time. As the Trust develops it will review these terms and may vary the national agreements to respond to local conditions and reflect Trust requirements following negotiation with the BMA Local Negotiating Committee.

  1. The new consultant will be required to maintain their private residence in contact with the public telephone service, and to reside within ten miles by road from the Churchill Hospital unless specific written approval for a greater distance is given by the Medical Director of the Trust.

  1. The salary scale is £84,559.00 £114,003.00 with nine thresholds

  1. The successful candidate must hold full registration and licence to practice with the GMC.
