Assistant Technical Officer

Job summary

This role involves preparing and programming the dialysis machines and related equipment for dialysis sessions, and assisting the nurse with caring for a team of patients whilst on dialysis. You will be provided with the appropriate training to learn how to do this and there may be further opportunities to progress to Nurse Associate Training and, becoming part of the on call rota for the unit.

This is a demanding role, involving both technical and caring aspects. On commencement of the post, support will be provided by a mentor (an experienced technician), and the Clinical Facilitators, until you are deemed competent to work unsupervised. The Clinical facilitators also provide continued support, to allow you to develop your skills further. Your reliability in terms of attendance and timekeeping are essential.

You will be working alongside nurses to provide dialysis care, and will ensure the needs of complex chronic patients are met.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure machines kept clean and disinfected between each patient
  • Records clinical observations on patients' dialysis charts and data input onto computer
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times, adhering to data protection act
  • Requires the moving of bulky/heavy items including dialysis machines and moving machines around the department using moving and handling techniques
  • Requires frequent periods of concentration when putting the patients on and off dialysis treatments due to using complex and technical machines, throughout the shift
  • Needs to be able to respond to unpredictable situations i.e. emergencies involving patients becoming unwell on dialysis, providing emergency assistance and following instructions and directions
  • Able to deal with conflict and challenging behaviour from patients at times
  • Able to deal with sudden changes in patients condition, such as becoming unwell, and cardiac arrests requiring resuscitation - can occur at any time on any shift
