This is a Teaching Fellow appointment in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Derby Hospital. The post will include an approximately 50:50 split of both clinical experience in the Emergency Department at the Royal Derby Hospital and dedicated time to teach medical students both on the shop floor and in small group tutorial settings.

The post is intended to provide the clinician with teaching experience in Emergency Medicine. The post would be ideal for those who are:

• At the end of Core Training, prior to applying for a training position at any level.
• Considering a career in Emergency Medicine or Acute Specialties and looking for teaching experience alongside the support and training required to successfully apply for a training post.
• Undecided on a career pathway and looking to undertake an additional acute post prior to future applications.

The department has a strong track record in supporting a wide range of trainees. Our range of innovative workforce solutions coupled with education, mentorship and support have received national recognition, including RCEM Clinical Team of the Year in 2017. This experience will be fully utilised to ensure that each successful applicant has individual support to ensure that their career aspirations are achieved. As part of this there will be a designated Educational Supervisor for the duration of the post. We would encourage the post holder to complete work based placed assessments to allow documentation of their own development. From a clinical perspective these posts will participate in the 24 hour Emergency Department rota with flexibility to accommodate individual personal requirements.

The appointee will be expected to work as part of a team with a responsibility to maintain the highest standards of emergency clinical care. Active participation in internal supporting professional activities such as Departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit is essential.

The post is initially offered on a fixed term contract for 12 months. Depending on the wishes of the successful applicant this can then be extended, based on successful, objective progression throughout the post. The appointee will initially be entitled to 27 to 32 days annual leave per annum, plus Bank Holidays, dependent on experience.

Full registration with GMC and Licence to Practise on submission of application is essential. Applicants must also have a minimum of 12 months experience as a doctor working in a UK Healthcare setting and a minimum of 6 months working in Emergency Medicine in the UK. Excellent skills in written and spoken English will be expected, in order to enable highly effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The post holder will be expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advice. Whilst on duty the appointee will be clinically and professionally responsible for their patients. It will also be their duty to:

• Keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition;
• Involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment;

• Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the

General Medical Council (GMC) and comply in particular with the GMCs guidance on

Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time;

• Carry out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in their Job

Plan eg the keeping of records and the provision of reports, the proper delegation of tasks, maintaining skills and knowledge.

Specific duties within the Emergency Department include:

• Along with the other Middle Grade Doctors provide 24-hour on-site cover to the Emergency Department.
• Assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients attending the Emergency Department.
• Taking the role of Team Leader in the management of patients with major injury or illness within the department.
• Supervision of Junior Medical Staff and Emergency Nurse Practitioners including clinical work, time keeping and documentation.
• Teaching of Junior Medical Staff, Medical Students and Emergency Nurse Practitioners in the clinical setting.
• Assist to maintain the flow of patients through the department.
• Be responsible for the management of the Emergency inpatients (Ward 101).
• Liaise with the Nurse Team Leader in the management of the department.
• Undertake other responsibilities by mutual agreement with the Consultants as part of continuing professional development and clinical governance.

The appointee will be responsible for teaching assessment as directed, contributing to graduate and continuing medical education activity locally, regionally and nationally as appropriate and to participate in clinical audit under local arrangements (in light of relevant departmental guidance).

Teaching and Training

The Trust supports an active, post-graduate and undergraduate medical education programme. NHS library facilities are available at the Royal Derby Hospital whilst the Graduate Entry Medical school library is directly linked to the Green field Library in Nottingham.

The Derby campus of the Nottingham University Medical School specialises in Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) trainees. We currently have a mixture of these and traditional undergraduate students from the Nottingham site. Students attend the Emergency Department in both their third and final year for standard curriculum requirements. In addition, we have Medical Students for Special Study Modules for four weeks at a time.

The educational component of this post funded by the nationwide SIFT initiative, designed to improve the quality of teaching provided to medical students. As such, the prime teaching responsibility is aimed at undergraduates within the department and in the wider medical school including the Clinical Skills Simulator. However, outside these funded sessions, the appointee may wish to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and trainees within the specialty, where appropriate.

The current Undergraduate Education Team within the Dept consists of a Lead Consultant, 2 Teaching Doctors and one Clinical Nurse Educator, as well as an enthusiastic team of Consultants and Senior Staff.

• At least 12 months experience as a doctor working in a UK Healthcare setting
