Job summary
The Bed Manager has operational responsibility for co-ordinating emergency and elective admissions across the Medical, Surgical and Cancer Divisions, playing a key role in management of capacity across the Trust.
The aim is to ensure that patients are assessed and treated in the best place with the best possible experience, and if decisions are made that patients need admission that this is done in an efficient and timely manner to ensure the best possible patient pathway.
The Bed Manager will be expected to work with, and co-ordinate plans with Operational management team, Divisional Managers, and ward teams.
At times of pressure, conflict will arise between emergency and elective admissions when insufficient beds are available. In such circumstances, the bed manager, in partnership with the Divisional management team, will be responsible for developing and implementing a clear plan to manage conflicting demands and minimise patient risk.
Main duties of the job
This role will involve ensuring the best possible patient flow through the pathway. Ensuring that patients are in an appropriate environment to receive care by providing timely and accurate information regarding bed availability, ensuring this information is made regularly available to the assessment areas, wards, and the operations team.
Th post holder will be responsible for minimising delay to admission for patients in medical, surgical and cancer services. Working with the multi-disciplinary teams to ensure timely admission into the appropriate environment. Influencing ward sisters and other staff to maintain an accurate bed state 24/7 and expected dates of discharge for all patients. Escalating delays to the Operations Team and Divisional Management Teams when these cannot be resolved at ward level and monitor the level of planned discharges and identify variations to expected date of discharge or transfer, supporting the ward teams to facilitate appropriate patient moves.
