Job summary

This is a full time substantive appointment for UHDB NHS Foundation Trust based at Derbyshire Children's Hospital at the Royal Derby Hospital, although other services are provided across all the Trust sites including the Queens Hospital Burton site and peripheral clinics at Ilkeston, Lichfield and Tamworth. It is not anticipated that this post will require any cross site working.

We are looking for a Paediatric Emergency trained doctor to join our flexible team and compliment the range of services provided. The appointee should have PEM grid training, or have paediatric subspecialty training via RCEM route, or be able to demonstrate equivalent training.

Main duties of the job

Provision of a comprehensive Paediatric Urgent and Emergency Care service to UHDB NHS Foundation Trust and the surrounding areas, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.

Responsibility for the continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of your staff.

Provision of a resident consultant senior medical cover running the children's emergency department with consultant presence between 08.30 and 23.00 7 days per week (Winter hours are until 24.00 with a compensatory later start time)

Responsibility for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally & nationally as appropriate

This is a purpose built department opened May 2009 that sees over 45,000 attendances per year. It won the CHKS award in 20015 for the UKs best emergency department and the co-located Observation unit has been used as a practice example by the RCPCH when rewriting the standards for SSPAUs. Most recently the Emergency department won the RCEM award 2017 for the Best Emergency Department team. We are an accredited Grid training site for Paediatric Emergency Medicine and are a founder member of the PERUKI clinical research network. We are active in this network and are currently participating in 3 trials.

We function as a single front door for all GP, 999 and self-referrals, and operate as a one stop shop. Clinicians in CED have admitting rights to the general paediatric ward. There is no separate childrens admissions unit. Our observation unit has 4 beds and one cubicle and allows us to observe certain patients for up to 8 hours. We also run an ambulatory care service from this unit.

  • MBBS/MBChB or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice at time of application.
  • Full Membership of RCPCH or FRCEM
  • Have CCT or within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview or entry onto GMC Specialist Register by time of interview or equivalent
