Job summary
If you would relish a challenge in becoming a Medical Laboratory Assistant in Microbiology, then we would love to hear from you.
The successful applicant will support the Biomedical Scientists by performing a wide variety of tasks associated with the processing of samples. Duties vary between areas and include the sorting, preparation, processing and handling of blood, urine, tissue and bodily fluids.
You will also be required to undertake quality assurance procedures, housekeeping duties, maintenance of equipment and disposal of clinical waste, therefore the ability to multi-task and work flexibly are essential.
You will be working as part of the Derbyshire Pathology Service within the Microbiology laboratory based at Royal Derby Hospital. Derbyshire Pathology serves the pathology laboratories of the Royal Derby, Chesterfield Royal and Queens Burton hospitals. This post is based at the Royal Derby Hospital, but some cross site working may be required.
Main duties of the job
- To undertake routine analytical tasks and be responsible for instrument maintenance and housekeeping in line with the departmental standard operating procedures, for which on the job training will be given and competency assessments undertaken.
- To undertake basic clerical duties including data inputting and phone enquiries, to support sample testing and reporting on the laboratory computer system. Including, the inputting of referral work results from other hospital laboratories onto the laboratory computer system.
- Organising the regular transport of samples, goods and post to other sites and laboratories, including the preparation of samples for onward transfer to reference laboratories.
- Stock control and maintenance of reagents and consumables in the working environment.
- To adhere to information governance policies, including maintaining standards of confidentiality, security and safety in line with national and local guidelines.
- Once trained and competent, to train new starters. To act as a role model and ensure that all team members and others visiting the area give a high priority to policies and procedures relating to infection control in order to maintain a safe clinical environment for everyone
