Job summary

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Hepatologist to join our University of Derby and Burton Hospitals (UHDB) team of 5 Hepatology consultants and 6 specialist nurses. Our IQILS (Improving Quality of Liver Services) accredited service is based at the Royal Derby Hospital, where our patients have access to a dedicated Hepatology ward.

We are a level 2 liver unit providing comprehensive care for all aspects of hepatobiliary disease including day case paracentesis, liver biopsy, Fibroscan, ERCP and EUS. We are a tertiary referral centre for PTC and TIPSS, with support from 3 GI radiologists. Our liver transplant patients are seen in a dedicated monthly transplant clinic with in-reach from the Birmingham transplant team on a 3 monthly basis.

This new consultant post will help support plans to further expand our role in the assessment and follow up of transplant patients. Our viral hepatitis service runs in-reach services into local drug treatment centres and prisons, as well as a joint clinic with GU medicine. An advanced care planning clinic and MDT supported by colleagues in Palliative medicine and alcohol care team provides care to our patients with advanced liver disease. We provide Hepatology training to Specialty Registrars, including a new Derby-Birmingham Advanced Training Post in Hepatology. As well as being a dedicated Hepatologist, the appointee will have the opportunity to develop a subspecialty or research interest.

We would encourage applicants with experience of, or a desire to train in EUS to apply, as there is an opportunity to support the EUS service in the long term. Provision of ERCP will not form part of the post's job plan.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will also work closely with our 14 luminal gastroenterologists in providing a 24/7 gastroenterology and liver service including a daily inpatient endoscopy list and endoscopy nurse supported out of hours GI bleed service. The Royal Derby Hospital has a 7 room endoscopy unit with the latest HD instruments and performs over 20,000 procedures annually.

This is a full-time position, but candidates wishing to work part-time or in a job-share are encouraged to apply. If a part-time or job-share person is appointed modification of the job content will be discussed with the appointee on a personal basis. Informal visits are welcomed.
