Job summary

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit a Rehabilitation Medicine Consultant based at the Florence Nightingale Community Hospital, Derby. This post is part replacement and part of a workforce strategy to plan for the next five years.

We have the flexibility to provide a bespoke job plan that encompasses your academic, teaching or research interests and your work-life balance. The advertised post is fulltime, but part-time or annualised working arrangements can be considered.

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is a forward thinking, research active and friendly department which covers a wide scope of neurological and amputee rehabilitation across the 1.1 million population of Southern Derbyshire and South & East Staffordshire.

Main duties of the job

There are currently five Rehabilitation Medicine consultants , a Specialist Doctor and two Specialty Doctor, alongside SpR and F2 posts. The medical team work with well established multi-disciplinary teams.

The post holder will contribute to the 19 bed Level 2b Rehabilitation Medicine inpatient ward (King's Lodge), inreach to Royal Derby Hospital and outpatient services. This will be on a rotational basis, according to shared decision making amongst colleagues.

Inreach to the Royal Derby Hospital is an innovative aspect of our department's role. The Rehabilitation Medicine consultant works with a dedicated Neurological Rehabilitation Inreach Team, providing specialist rehabilitation to patients waiting in acute beds for inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation.

As well as general Rehabilitation Medicine and Spasticity clinics, the postholder will have the opportunity to develop their practice in specific areas of outpatient rehabilitation, as decided between the postholder and consultant team. Possible clinics include Complex Needs , Neuromuscular Rehabilitation, Huntington's Disease, TBI, Amputee, and MND. There will be opportunities to gain further experience alongside the consultants currently doing these clinics, if necessary

The department plays an active role in medical student teaching. Any applicant interested in education would have the opportunity to develop this further.

There is no on call duty.

Job responsibilities

In addition to any specialist interests all consultants will be involved in providing a general clinical service to the Trust.

  1. Provision with consultant colleagues of a service to Derbyshire, Staffordshire & surrounding areas with responsibility for diagnosis & treatment of patients at the hospitals & clinics at which you have duties.
  2. Responsible for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to & training of your staff.
  3. Active participation in undergraduate & post graduate education, including training sessions for Foundation Years, Specialty Registrars and medical students.
  4. Provision of cover for your consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave including care of patients & supervision of doctors in training.
  5. Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.
  6. Participate in clinical audit under local arrangements.
  7. Commitment to entering patients into MRC trials where appropriate (if the appointee has an interest in research this would be supported by the Trust & the Division).
  8. Commitment to taking part in annual appraisal process which will be undertaken by the Assistant Clinical Director for Rehabilitation Medicine. Commitment to take part in revalidation
  9. Responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust. It is mandatory for all Consultants to keep up to date with evidence based practice
  10. Responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as Duties of a Doctor, Good Medical Practice, & the GMC Performance Procedures .
  11. Exceptional requirements to undertake additional duties for limited periods within geographical area specified above or undertake duties at other hospitals in the event of a major disaster or incident.

  • MBBS or equivalent
