Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for F3/ Junior Clinical Fellows in our Emergency Medicine to join our friendly, enthusiastic Emergency team at UHDB, based at the RDH site.

These are fixed term, 12 month posts, with the opportunity for a further 12 month extension following successful, objective progression throughout the post. Any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service need.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintaining the highest clinical standards in the management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department
  • Expected to prioritise and time-manage effectively according to the activity of the department and to utilise appropriately the available senior staff for advise
  • Participation in the 24 hour Emergency rota
  • Encouraged to complete work based places assessments for their own development
  • Participation in ED specific teaching, training and support depending on career aspirations
  • Opportunities to undertake additional protected time away from the clinical area to pursue other areas of interest, for example Quality Improvement, Teaching, Education, Research & Paediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Expectation to support the training of all levels of staff: medical, nursing, para-medical
  • Opportunity to participate in Audit

We are advertising a number of F3/ Junior Clinical Fellows in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Derby Hospital. The post is intended to provide the clinician with post-Foundation experience in Emergency Medicine. The post would be ideal for those who:

  • Considering a career in Emergency Medicine or Acute Specialities and looking for the support and training required to successfully apply or a training post
  • Planning to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine or Acute Specialities and looking to undertake their training in the Royal Derby Hospital via the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) route at a later date
  • Undecided on a career pathway and looking to undertake an additional acute post prior to future application.

The post will include clinical experience in the Emergency Department as well as specific teaching, training and support depending on career aspirations. In addition, there may be the opportunity to undertake additional protected time away from the chosen clinical area to pursue an area of interest, which will be decided by a competitive selection process post interview. These areas of interest include the following:

  • Quality Improvement
  • Teaching/Education
  • Research

The department has a strong track record in supporting a wide range of trainees. Our range of innovative workforce solutions couples with education, mentorship and support have received national recognition, including RCEM ' Clinical Team of the Year' in 2017. This experience will be fully utilised to ensure that each successful applicant has individual support to ensure their career aspirations are achieved. As part of tis there will be protected non-clinical time to attend relevant teaching on a monthly basis, as well as a designated Educational Supervisor for the duration of the post. From a clinical perspective these posts will participate in the 24 hour Emergency Department rota with flexibility to accommodate individual personal requirements.

The rotation is initially offered on a fixed term contract for 12 months with possibility of extension upon mutual agreement. Depending on the wishes of the successful candidate this can be extended, based on successful, objective progression throughout the post, onto a longer term contract with three monthly secondments for each year in post.

Full registration with GMC and Licence to practice on submission of application is essential. Applicants must also have a minimum of 12 months experience as a doctor working in a UK healthcare setting. Excellent skills in written and spoken English will be expected, in order to enable highly effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.

Clinical Audit is an important part if each Departments Governance. These are aimed at involving all levels of staff. The post holder will be expected to assume responsibility (under the supervision of a Consultant) for a specific audit topic.

Education and Training

The trust supports an active, post-graduate and under graduate medical education programme. NHS library facilities are available at the Royal Derby Hospital whilst the Graduate Entry Medical school library is directly linked to the Green Field library at Nottingham.

There will be the ability for successful candidates to attend ED-specific teaching. Attendance at these sessions alone provided almost all of their annual CPD, but study leave will be available.

A Consultant or Middle grade educational supervisor for the period of the appointment will be allocated.
