Job summary

We have an opportunity for a Therapist to join the Hand Therapy team as an Advanced Practitioner. We are aware that therapists have not all had the opportunity to study for an MSc and so there is the option to start on a band 7 salary whilst we support you through a MSc when you would convert to a band 8a.

The team works collaboratively within the Hand Unit, with 10 consultants, 3 nurse practitioners and 2 other ESP's. The layout of the hand unit was designed to be integrated and self-contained with therapists, nurses and Doctors all working alongside each other in clinics. This facilitates MDT working.

The hand therapists see a variety of trauma and elective patients and use a range of therapeutic techniques including early and late stage rehabilitation, provision of thermoplastic and off the shelf splinting, pressure garments, swelling and scar management and the use of the Primus work simulator and MULE. Services are provided to in-patients and outpatients, on an individual and group basis.

We are a motivated and dynamic group of therapists who are keen to continue to develop and the Hand Unit is committed to encourage and promote further learning and development. As a result we have input into teaching on a variety of internal and external courses, as well as in service training sessions. In addition to the courses that we hold, we run and present on BAHT level 1 and 2 accredited courses.

Main duties of the job

The extended scope practitioner role is responsible for assessing and managing simple closed injury new referrals directly from ED and local minor injury departments, reviewing simple post-surgical patients. They also work alongside the consultant team to assess and treat patients with common hand conditions referred from GPs. This includes requesting imaging, nerve conduction studies and referring on for further treatment and/ or providing steroid injection therapy.

Although the post is predominantly a clinical post it will also combine aspects of research, teaching on a variety of courses, as well as deputising for the team leader with managerial roles. The hand therapy team is a large and diverse team and so evidence of attendance at a management course would be helpful.

It is essential that candidates possess custom made splinting skills to a high level. As a team we are heavily involved in a variety of research projects and there is an expectation that the successful candidate will also contribute to this. Experience of previous involvement in research is essential.

Some of the clinics that are run are in peripheral hospitals and so candidates must be a car owner and be willing and able to travel.

The hours are in line with the service needs but due to courses and potential training there will be the need to be flexible.

Closing date of applications: 07 February 2024

Interview date: 21 February 2024
