Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced leader to take on the role of Band 7 Senior Sister / Senior Charge Nurse to lead the Nightingale Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Unit (NMU).

NMU is a 20 bedded Specialist Palliative Care Unit caring for patients with complex palliative care needs. The multidisciplinary team provides expert care to patients with advanced and progressive illness to improve physical symptoms and psychological distress.

The candidate should demonstrate excellent communication skills, be dynamic, embrace change and strive for excellence in all aspects of the role. They also need to be supportive and be able to manage the daily challenges of working in a specialist palliative care unit on an acute Hospital site.

Applicants must hold a current NMC registration and have demonstrable post registration experience including Band 6 experience. The applicant must clearly be able to demonstrate their leadership experience. Palliative Careexperience is essential and Specialist Palliative Care experience is desirable.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a proactive individual to inspire a positive team environment focused on trust, communication and cohesive teamwork. They need to be a visible leader, able to directly manage different situations such as complaints and learning, safeguarding, discipline and capability; ensuring that patient safety is always a priority. We are seeking a positive role model to always maintain and uphold a high standard of professional behaviour.

The successful applicant will take overall nursing responsibility for the day-to-day unit environment. They will ensure that a high standard of nursing care is provided and encourage service development and quality improvement. They will contribute to the management of issues specific to a Specialist Palliative Care Unit which includes use of charitable funds and line management of some allied health professionals in complementary therapy and creative workers. They will prioritise staff development and support to create an inviting place to work.
