Job summary

The Chesterfield site of Derbyshire Pathology is looking for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join us working in the busy Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments within the Blood Sciences department.

The successful candidate will be able to work flexibly to ensure service provision while helping to deliver technical excellence with enthusiasm, attention to detail and professional, can-do attitude.

We have full UKAS ISO15189:2012 accreditation and we are also accredited with the IBMS as a training laboratory for registration and specialist portfolios.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be trained, and competency assessed to join the 24/7 shift system undertaking early, late, day, night, weekend and bank holiday shifts. Therefore the ability to work autonomously for long periods of time as part of the 24/7 shift rota is essential.

The role involves but is not limited to the following:

  • Processing and validation of patient specimens analysed on the Sysmex XN9000 line and CS5100 analysers.
  • Reporting on blood film morphology.
  • Processing, validation and cross-matching of transfusion samples using the IH100 analysers and manual techniques.
  • Appropriate referral of abnormal results to clinicians.
  • Monitoring of blood stocks and use of the Blood360 electronic tracking system.
  • Maintenance of equipment.
  • Service development inclusive of quality management activities and projects.
  • Effective communication and team working.
  • Experience of using our current equipment, Q-Pulse and/or CliniSys WPE would be an advantage but full training will be given.
