Job summary

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join one of the largest NHS providers in the country in the critical role of Chief Pharmacist.

We are looking to recruit a talented and experienced individual to provide strategic and professional leadership for Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB). The UHDB pharmacy department has a strong history of innovation in pharmacy services, and you will have a talented team of senior staff to lead. With comprehensive 7 day clinical and supply services across multiple sites, pharmacy is a well-established and vitally important part of the Trust.

Our technical services team are leaders in the provision of Ready to Administer injectables and our four aseptic units provide opportunity for further service development. Our pharmacy digital team support a range of technologies (from dispensing robots to smart pumps) as well as several 'first of type' projects.

The Trust sits within two local Integrated care systems, and you will have the scope to influence medicines optimisation beyond UHDB.

Main duties of the job

  1. Provide professional leadership to the pharmacy service whilst ensuring the Trust meets all relevant regulatory and statutory obligations.
  2. Undertake the roles of Accountable officer for Controlled Drugs and Superintendent Pharmacist for UHDB
  3. Provide specialist advice and expertise to the Trust on all aspects of pharmacy and medicines optimisation.
  4. Maintain & develop effective working relationships with all key internal & external users and stakeholders.
  5. Work closely with local health system leaders to realise the opportunities and benefits that are available from our Integrated Pharmacy & Medicines Optimisation (IPMO) plans.

The Chief Pharmacist provides leadership, specialist advice and expertise to the Trust, with responsibility for all aspects of pharmacy services and medicines management across the organisation. The postholder will ensure that staff and medicines are managed in line with relevant legislation and regulations, and that national and professional guidance on medicines governance is followed across the organisation. This includes management of risks related to achieving compliance with relevant national standards e.g. Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Medicines Health Regulatory Authority (MHRA).

This important leadership position fulfils several statutory roles for the Trust including the roles of Superintendent Pharmacist, Accountable Officer for Controlled Drugs and Responsible Officer for Homecare Medicines. The postholder may also be required to undertake the role of executive board member of the (wholly owned) subsidiary company, Pride Pharmacy.

The postholder provides professional leadership for pharmacy services and all aspects of medicines use across the Trust. This includes ensuring all services and medicines use is compliant with relevant regulatory & legal frameworks and aligned with national policy developments. As an expert in this specialist field, their professional influence extends across the local and regional health economies, with the potential for formal and informal leadership roles in the local systems to be agreed with the appointee.

The postholder helps to tackle the workforce challenges of medical, nursing and pharmacy professions by developing innovative services and innovative workforce solutions. They are responsible for developing and implementing the Trusts Integrated Pharmacy & Medicines Optimisation (IPMO) transformation plan, engagement with national reviews (e.g. ascetics & special medicines) and supporting adoption of new technologies such as e-prescribing (ePMA) and automation to optimise the safe use of medicines across the Trust.

The postholder drives the development of commercial partnerships and income opportunities by developing key relationships with external stakeholders from the NHS and commercial organisations. They will work closely with pharmacy leaders and commissioners (ICB & NHSE) across Staffordshire and Derbyshire to develop Integrated Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation strategies that improve patient outcomes in a cost-effective way
