Due to staff vacancies and service developments in the Ophthalmology service, we are seeking to recruit a number of highly motivated and committed Ophthalmic Science Practitioners to join our friendly, dynamic and enthusiastic team at UHDB in order to expand the diagnostic support provided by the Ophthalmic Science Practitioner team.

The successful candidates will be required to provide diagnostic support for the Ophthalmology services provided by Queens Hospital, Burton-upon-Trent which includes the Treatment Centre Burton, Samuel Johnson Community Hospital Lichfield, and Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital Tamworth.

The post holder will be part of the Ophthalmology team working in a busy Ophthalmology department. The team consists of Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Orthoptists, Ophthalmic Science Practitioners, Assistant Ophthalmic Science Practitioners, nursing and administrative staff

The post will include working at 3 sites, Treatment Centre Queens Hospital, Burton upon Trent, Sir Robert Peel Hospital, Tamworth and Samuel Johnson Community Hospital, Lichfield, and therefore it is highly advantageous for you to be a car owner/driver

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties will include (depending on role)

  1. Automated visual field assessment using the Humphrey visual field analyser.
  2. Focimetry and transposition
  3. Visual function assessment of the macular and nerve fibre layer using automated OCT equipment
  4. Biometry assessment using the IOL master and A scan.
  5. Fundus photography
  6. Instillation of eye drops as agreed by the Ophthalmologist.

Candidates will ideally have all the skills outlined above for the Band 4 role, however in-house training can be provided and the successful candidate would initially be recruited at a Band 3 level until competencies in all areas are achieved.

Administrative duties will include:

  1. Data input.
  2. Dealing with telephone, email and verbal enquiries.
  3. Supporting the Orthoptic department with general administrative duties.
  4. Other administrative duties as advised by the Head Orthoptist.

Responsible for measuring the visual function of patients attending the outpatient eye clinic, by recording their visual acuity and assessing their visual field.

Assessment of the results where necessary and liaise with the Ophthalmologist regarding patient care.

Determine optical prescriptions from patients glasses using automated ormanual equipment or from the opticians report.

Perform Optical Coherence Tomography of the optic nerve and retinal nerve fibre layer.

Perform automated biometry using the IOL Master, manual biometry using the A scan, and keratometer to determine the power of intraocular lens required for cataract surgery.

Perform fundus photography.

Instillation of eye drops as agreed by the Ophthalmologist and in accordance with the local guidelines.

Maintain accurate records that are signed and dated by the post-holder after each patient contact.

When patients attend clinic, ensure records are given to the appropriate member of staff.

Ability to prioritise own workload.

Applicants must have 5 GCSEs grade A-C to include Maths, English and Science and standard keyboard skills.
