Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced, driven pharmacy technician or pharmacist who has a passion for education and training and supporting the development of the pharmacy workforce .

The post-holder will take a lead role in progressing the development of a sustainable, flexible and integrated pharmacy workforce for Derbyshire on behalf of the Joined Up Care Derbyshire (JUCD) Pharmacy Leadership Group. The role will develop and implement key workforce projects identified in the JUCD Integrating Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation (IPMO) Plan. The post holder will contribute to the JUCD workforce transformation agenda with the opportunity to develop and advance the pharmacy profession within Derbyshire reflecting new ways of working across organisational boundaries, and to develop a workforce with the knowledge and skills to deliver high quality patient care.

Main duties of the job

The primary objective of this post will be to establish pre-registration pharmacy technician and foundation pharmacist (pre-registration) cross sector training programmes across Derbyshire by December 2022 to address specific pharmacy workforce needs, and to make Derbyshire the best place to undertake pharmacy training. Measures of success will include evaluation of the training programmes by trainees and training providers, registration success rates and retention rates of newly qualified staff within Derbyshire.

Job responsibilities

  • Engage with key stakeholders across Joined Up Care Derbyshire and the Midlands region to design and implement cross sector training programmes for pre-registration pharmacy technicians and foundation pharmacists (pre-registration), to facilitate growing a sustainable and flexible pharmacy workforce across Derbyshire.
  • Work with Higher and Further Education Institutions, Health Education England and regional links, to develop and agree the content of a cross sector training programme to meet the registration requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  • Identify, negotiate and secure financial funding for trainee salary costs, and funding for formal qualifications.
  • Collaboratively agree input into the programme from experienced, high quality trainers to deliver practical on the job clinical and operational training from across different sectors of pharmacy, to develop competent, flexible pharmacy professionals.
  • Promote, define and support the recruitment processes to cross sector training posts across Derbyshire for pre-registration pharmacy technicians and foundation pharmacists (pre-registration), promoting Derbyshire as the best place to work and train.
  • Ensure equitable access to support and mentoring for the trainees undertaking the programmes, supporting the best outcomes from the training programme for individuals, organisations and the system.
  • Evaluate the quality of the training programme delivered to understand impact on individuals, organisations and the system as experienced by the trainees and training organisations, registration success rates and retention rates of newly qualified staff within Derbyshire.
  • Communicate and work with key stakeholders to promote the projects in place across JUCD to develop the pharmacy workforce by sharing experiences, innovation and good practice nationally.
